For a trip in March United wants $400 more than what Spirit would charge.
The problem is the inbound Spirit flight arrives at 12:05 am.
I would probably meet a ride to Jaco from the airport the next day ( noon or so) so I would need to spend the night near the airport. I am not interested in going to San Jose that late.
What would be my best bet?

I stayed here about 4 years ago for the Spirit red eye flight. It was about $40. It's small but the rooms were nice and clean. There's a shuttle available but it's only 2 miles from the airport if they don't operate that late.

I always suggest going straight to Jaco and staying at Mango Mar or the bare-bones Cadillac Rock. Arriving at midnight, you should be in Jaco by 2am, early enough there should still be some "fun" hanging out at Orange Pub or Le Loft. And personally, I love driving at night...little traffic so an easier and quicker trip.

But for cheap hotels close to the airport, my first recommendation is Dos Palmas http://www.dospalmascr.com/airport/en/index.htm

And for airline cost, you might also check out Southwest but they too arrive around midnight...
