Post subject:  Inexpensive travel from Gulch to Jaco
All - Went to CR for first time about a year ago. Stayed 2 nights in Mona Lisa and then 2 at Morgans Cove in Jaco. Plan to repeat within the next few months.

I took a taxi from Mona Lisa to Jaco. Friendly driver but it was pricey... if I recall correctly about $100 USD each way. Way too much in my opinion.

I've heard of bus shuttle -intercity or something?? that will pick you up in hotel in San Jose and go to Jaco. Heard it's about 40 each way. Anyone used it? Any feedback? Any other options that don't involve dropping $200 USD round trip?

For 2,500 colones (about $5) each way, you can take a bus (similar to a Greyhound bus in the States) from Terminal 7-10, at Calle 10 and Avenida 7. That nice, NEW terminal is about 7 blocks west of Zona 2 and Mona Lisa. It is an easy walk from anywhere in the Gulch.

You get an assigned seat number, like in an airliner. The bus is not air conditioned, but that's not a problem for me until the last 3 miles at sea level in Jaco. Jaco is usually hot and humid all year long.

The ride usually takes about 2 1/2 hours, depending on the SJ rush hour traffic. But on Sunday nights, the ride to SJ from Jaco can be longer because of the heavy traffic returning from the beach.

Here is the site for the bus company. You can see the departure times and the number of seats still available for sale- - going and coming. It's best to buy your ticket at the terminal at least one day in advance.

Well, considering it is $40-$60 in gas to go downtown San Jose to Jaco and return plus another $8 in round trip tolls, the driver may have made $32-$52 for driving around 4 hours (minimum). So $8-$13 an hour is too much for using his car and spending his time giving you what you said was good service? Wow...

<<edit: This is based on taking someone from San Jose to Jaco and dropping them off for $100 one way. The costs are per round trip so to collect the $200 fee, a driver must make two round trips as he won't hang out in Jaco for a week waiting on you.>>

It's about $40 each way on Interbus. It picks you up at your hotel and drops you off at your hotel. Door to door service.

I believe you can book your ticket on line. Ask your friendly hotel desk person to do it for you.
Will need your credit card though.

PVT, I think you did not figure that correctly. The OP said $100 each way, total $200. You say $40-$60 for gas and $8 for tolls, round trip. That leaves $132-$152 for the driver.

Sorry for the confusion...I was only counting the cost to the driver to go from San Jose to Jaco, drop off the guy then return to San Jose where the driver lives. Those costs are per round trip but the driver must make two round trips to collect two fees of $100 each way. So doing it that way, the driver will spend $80-$120 in gas and $16 in tolls to make $200 so $64 to $104 for at least 8 hours of work so $8-$13 an hour max for the rental of his car and his time, insurance, repairs, taxes etc. To me, that just doesn't seem like "way too much".

The bus is an option, but for a no hassle fun experience and worth the money, book with Pura Vida Transport. Sometimes saving money is not worth it.

you can check with La Amistad. it used to be, if you stayed four nights, they throw in a round trip.
The bus is not a bad deal, either

I'm glad you posted this. I was going to mention how those buses are grounds for thieves to work their thing, but there would somebody contradicting me and accusing me of being overcautious. :P I took the public bus twice, once was no issues, but the legroom was tight like Spirit and the return bus ride was at night and with the windows wide open, it got cold and the draft gave me a cold for the next few days. And both times, I saw people closely admiring (scouting) the bags in the overhead bins.

If you don't want to spend the $100 on a trusted driver, then go with Interbus. You can relax and sleep soundly knowing your possessions are safe. And the driver will pull into a roadside restaurant if you need a bathroom stop.
