Post subject:  "Wintering Over" in San Jose

Now that I'm retired, I'm looking to spend Jan thru Mar in San Jose. It seems to be a challenge to find apartments for short stays of a few months. Old posts here talk about:
a. Sudamer
b. Vista Linda
c. Scotland Apts

It's my understanding that the Sudamer neighborhood is dicey, and the Vista Linda is not close enough to the gulch area to comfortably walk. I did see 1 studio Apt listed by a CRT brother a few months ago (on VRBO), but that is now over $1000 a month, which I think is crazy for a studio.

If anyone has any suggestions/recent experience with the above 3 Apts, or any other viable options, it would be appreciated.

Are you planning to bring "female guests" over?

If not, you may want to consider Aranjuez Apartments. They are not really chica friendly so if you plan on bringing working girls over, forget them. They are located in the neighborhood east of Sportsmens Lodge, next to the Hospital.

Book yourself into a hotel for a week, then spend time looking around. Get a local phone so you can call around. Make friends with a cab driver so he can take you around and offer advice on the neighborhood. I checked out the Scotland Apts. Wouldn't stay there on a bet. There's lots of options.

I checked out Scotland Apts. one year. No thanks. Talk to Guy at Mona Lisa. One monger told me he got a month there for a grand. Has to be cash.

Dunn Inn has apartments for rent a block west of Dunn Inn. They run around $850 per month, less with a two month commitment. I forget what is and isn't included. The agent said having guests in is no problem.

Go on the Vista Linda website. I just booked for Oct-Dec at $475 all in for a furnished apt. All utilities, cable, .Wi-Fi They responded quickly. I had a friend check it out who lives in San Jose. Bus service to downtown just outside the door. Stores , restaurant ,etc close by.

I didn't care for the location. I saw one of the rooms in August. It resembled a Queen at La Amistad, and I'm not sure it's chica friendly.

I liked the times stayed at Vista Linda Apartments.

It's a little out of the gulch, but the bus or taxi is convenient....... and it's a nice walk to the gulch during daylight.

Vista Linda is full of like-minded gringos. They'll be helpful if you need help.

I was inside one of the Dunn Inn apts once. It was not too bad bit it's inside a parking lot and has a gate at night.
