I have been keeping an eye on availability and rates at the Cocal for after 4/16 when they were going to go down. I just checked through the link on amcostarica hoping to book for next month and they seem to have gone very high. Anyone else notice?

Yes, was told they raised every room about $20 in the last week or two. :(

Hope they don't do like the Beatle Bar did and get so greedy they price themselves out of the market. Guess Croc's coming in as non-monger place made the decision for them

Why, is Croc's more expensive so Cocal made a jump as well, or did Croc's take some of their business so they are making up the loss via higher prices?

Confirmed with them this weekend. Rates have gone up by $20 for green season, from where they were last year.

Personally, I think it has nothing to do with Croc's and everything to do with demand and supply. It is a small hotel, they have a monopoly on the chica action, and it is nice and convenient for the foreign visitor who will stay there regardless of the additional $20.

Wouldn't you do the same if you were the owner?

What we need as customers is credible competition...they have none.

Croc's being non-monger means they dont have to worry about competition.

Yes, Crocs is still more expensive...cheapest room I've seen is $179 a night and that isn't an ocean view. The idea Crocs is charging more so Cocal went up is an interesting one. What I meant in my comment was since Crocs is NOT trying to compete for the monger business, they went up as supply and demand took hold. The demand is off the chart and they have a limited supply of rooms. I don't think Crocs took any of their business and even if they did, they can make it up easy enough. Place seems to be booked 24/7 (except Sun-Mon nights).

I notice the website showed $120 for pool side room in low season, but my reservation shows $96 tax in after CRT discount for deluxe pool side room. Not sure if it was a mistake or I'll get upcharged or get courtyard room upon checkin.

I have a reservation but forgot to mention CRT card. Will they just discount upon checkout?

That's actually smart business. I'm surprised they waited this long.

As long as they don't get too greedy, or do something stupid like charging chicas to come in, they can get away with charging an extra $20/night in the low season. I'd expect a $50 increase during high season; they would be leaving money on the table if they didn't. Fat, lazy gringos don't mind paying for the convenience of not having to walk a few blocks in that inferno. There's probably a waiting list on most days. As long as the chicas come in and aren't made to feel uncomfortable, the guys will follow.

I stayed @ the Cocal 10 days ago, 2 nights in the junior suite-$139.50 a night. 10% off w/crt the green season rate of $155. Was quite a room, private balcony with table & chairs, a living room with sofa/tv/coffee table/worktable/fridge etc. & a separate bedroom. Was quite roomy compared to the standard rooms.
