The Tuasa (red and white) bus is the cheapest. Cost is about 555 colones (about $1). The Tuasa San Jose Direct bus comes about every 15 minutes during daylight hours. You get the bus at the curb on the street directly in front of the airport parking garage. There is a busy bus stop there. There is often a marshall at the bus stop who can direct you to the correct bus. Look for the sign in the windshield that says SAN JOSE.. Ask the driver "Directo San Jose???" If he nods "yes", get on. If it's not the Directo bus, you'll go to Alejuela before you go to San Jose. That'll cost you an extra 30 minutes. The Tuasa bus takes you to their terminal in downtown San Jose on Avenida 2, between Calle 12 and Calle 14. You can walk to the Dunn Inn in about 15-20 minutes, or you can take a taxi from the Tuasa terminal to the Dunn Inn for about $2.00. The bus will NOT accept U.S. money. The taxista MAY accept U.S. money. You can change dollars for colones at a Bank of Costa Rica branch at the airport, inside on the ARRIVAL LEVEL (UPSTAIRS) after you land. Don't do this bus thing late at night (after, say, 9 pm). Look at the discounts for a paid CRT membership. Pay-up. You won't be sorry. |

There is a second company by the name of Station Wagon that offers the same service and drops you off very close to Tuasa. I have used Tuasa before without a problem. The only drawback to the bus is your baggage. If you have more than a backpack and small suitcase ir can be a pain in rear. When going back to the airport make sure you get the direct to airport bus. There are plenty of taxis in the area to get you to your hotel. |

I've done the Tuasa bus both ways several times with three pieces of luggage - - - - one is a full sized suitcase, two are carry-ons. Sometimes the big bag goes in the compartment under the bus (placed there either by me or a bus worker). And sometimes the big bag goes to my seat with me and the other bags. If the bus is not too crowded, there is usually a place for the big bag near the wheelchair spot or by the rear door. Luggage on the bus has never been a problem for me. |

One time, they charged me for two seats - one for my luggage. Strange thing, the bus wasn't crowded; but it was still cheap. |

Thanks for the link to the shuttle bus Orange. I am looking to book it for a late arriving flight from Houston later this month. When I go to book it asks for flight number and time of arrival. Looks like it's available for that late arrival. My question is, will it really be there after I get through baggage pick up and customs? Any experience with this would be much appreciated. |

I used the Tuasa bus on my last trip. I asked the guy I was standing with at the bus stop, who I thought was an American eco-tourist, if this was the bus for San Jose and if they take dollars. He said he didn't know, but said he only had dollars. We jumped on, and this particular bus driver accepted a dollar from both of us, the ride is not bad, but as posted above not recommended for a first trip or after nightfall. The funny part of the bus trip was that the eco-tourist, ended up being a monger, a Cuba-Dave fan and CRT member. We found out we grew up in the same neighborhood back home, and I was the first person from back home he's met since moving to Texas 20 years ago, at a bus stop in Costa Rica. |

But I would have their local number just in case they weren't. 4100 0888 I have used them over 20 times and they never let me down yet. But I have never come in on the overnight flight. |

TUASA has a sign that says their hours are 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. I did this yesterday...Taxi from La Amistad to the Tuasa terminal 2000col/20 min....get in line for the 'Directo' to the Airport, board, pay the driver 580 col then ride to airport 29 min. Absolute no brainer. Less than $5 & maybe 15-20 min longer than taxi or shuttle. Yes I am a tightwad!! CostaReeker |

Orange gave good advice, would not do this without someone who has made ride before with you , why start out your vacation being stranded..... you can get a taxi for $ 20 up in that same area....just wait and as the taxi's roll up on you ...just say 10, 000c one will take it......100% with in 5 minutes |

I'm not braggin'....... I'm just sayin'. Don't be afraid to start with 8,000 for a red taxi on the airport's upper level to take you to your hotel in the Gulch. I've never paid more than 8,000. Didn't wait too long, either. Maybe one or two refusals.  I even felt kinda bad, because the taxista needs the money more than I do.  Soon I felt OK again, because I just give the girls everything that I saved at the airport. They need it more than the taxista does.

So..... Spending I presume $400 plus on round trip air, minimum of about $75 after taxes on a hotel room, prolly $35 eacj afternoon on a MP, $60 To 100 on a del rey girl, then add in $12 for breakfast (assuming not to exceed the 10% included on the check, $15 on lunch (again. Assuming you do not exceed the 10% on the check) $20 on dinner (again, assuming you do not exceed the 10% on the check). Let's assume a 4 day three night stay? And let's keep this conservative on the low end of everything. $400 air $225 hotel $30 3 breakfast $45 3 lunch $60 3 dinner (could be plus one more breakfast lunch or dinner depending on arrival departure times) Plus I could add meals for your "novia" but going to assume no Plus I could add alcohol consumption for your and your "novia(s)" but going to assume no $40 for little purple pills $20 in condoms $105 for 3 romps in a mp, again could be upto five depending on arrival departure times $180 for 3 del rey hookers Let's also assume you walk everywhere and never take a single taxi Let's also assume you but nothing in duty free or a pack of smokes, or bag of smoke or ANYTHING during your stay. Is that $1,025 for a 4 day 3 night stay in a conservative no alcohol consumption trip? Please let me know if I am off my rocker! Another $30 each way, $60 and you have round trip taxi fare (assuming you don't tip a taxi driver either, and I don't tip those fools either!) You tell me, is cheapest bus fare stil necessary, if a $30 taxi each way accounted for about 5% of your trip expenses? While bus fare would still encoure a $3/4 taxi fare to get you to Dunn inn, would be 1%? Your grand total of saving bus versus taxi would be about $50 but your time involved bus versus taxi would be a difference of about 30 minutes each way? Is your time worth less than what one of the hookers in the del rey would charge you, or 1 and a half MP girls? Nothing personal, but wanted to outline it all and look at it logically. |
