Reading up on this, Southwest is putting a lot of time/money ($156 million) into entering the Latin America market with the new international terminal at Hobby. This new terminal will make Hobby into a true international airport complete with Customs and all that fun. Unfortunately, it looks like it is going to be late 2015 (Oct.-Dec) before this new terminal is ready. That is the bad new, there won't be any HOU-SJO non-stop flights or really any Latin America service out of Hobby until it is up and running. At his time United has the only direct flights out of Houston to SJO. In May Spirit will offer four flights a week from IAH to SJO. Then in October or thereabouts SW will begin flights from HOBBY to SJO. The price competition should get very interesting. Of course, Spirit is not going to be attractive to travelers who like to be pampered (if there is such a thing in aviation now days) but it could set a low price benchmark for United and SW to try to match. I like the way this is setting up. |

Can't wait--United has been sticking it to us for a long time..............you can get a ticket out of Hobby now for $491 on Delta (through Atlanta). The direct flight is nice but it's about $167 cheaper. |

I suspect by the end of this year both SW and Spirit will be $350 to $450 and United around $500. Of course I do not know for certain but I can always hope. |
