Anybody have experience with the Zuma Tours water taxi from Jaco to Montezuma? Thought that spending a couple of days checking out Montezuma would provide some recovery time from Jaco activities. Cost $40 and appears that it takes just over an hour to make the trip. Trip #17 is in December!

The fastest way from Jaco to Montezuma is eat some of those jalapeno peppers they have in Jaco.
I did and I got the revenge in a hurry.

I've had a couple of clients that took that trip and both gave it good reviews...certainly the fastest/easiest way to get from one to the other.

I took the ride from Montezuma to Jaco last year. Very enjoyable boat ride. We saw dolphins along the way. Life jackets are provided and if the waves are to large it's my understanding that they won't make the trip. I have spent many hours in outboard motor boats and this was typical of that kind of ride. If you have a queasy stomach you might want to take some medication to avoid possible motion sickness.

Montezuma is a cool destino for a night or two. Check out the swimming hole/waterfall on the western edge of town. You will need to hike a river upstream for a bit but well worth it.

I did this trip in September and it was outstanding. It's Playa Herradura and not Jaco. However, they have a van on the beach that takes you the short trip to Jaco for no additional charge.

I should add that the alternative, overland route to Montazuma is a bone shaker at the end because the road is not paved. Taking the boat is much faster and easier.

The one caveat is that your feet will get a bit wet, getting on and off the boat. It's best to wear shorts and sandals that you can take off. The guides will carry your bags and secure and cover them on top of the boat, if necessary.

If it's a rainy day with rough seas, then it could make for an unpleasant trip. However, the rainy season is now finished on the Pacific coast, so the chances of that are very low until July or August of next year.

Zuma tours has a website for online booking. Definitely book in advance because they can fill up.

Thanks for all the input. I took the Zuma Tours water taxi from Jaco (actually Herradura Beach) to Montezuma and back. The service was professional and timely. They picked us up on time at the Cocal and drove us to the launch site. On the way over we spotted a whale and calf, but no dolphins. Weather was great for both trips and water was smooth. The only time I got wet was when I leaned over to get a better camera shot of the approach to Montezuma. There were about a dozen people on the boat on both legs of the trip. Montezuma is a nice quick getaway from Jaco, but bring your own girl(s) as it is a tiny little town. Hiked up to the waterfalls. One hint, there is a trail that runs parallel to the river about 10-15 meters above the river bed. It is much easier than navigating the slippery rocks along the river bed. Not knowing this, me and a buddy hiked up the river to the main falls on our own. Once there we hired a local for 10,000 colones to take us to the very top, where there are two additional waterfalls. He also promised an easier route than the river bed, which he delivered on. This guy was barefoot and scampering around the waterfalls and jungle like a billy goat. During the tricky river crossing he showed us exactly where to step and with which feet, and made it seem like a piece of cake. If anyone wants his number let me know. He also served as our personal photographer after a bit of a learning curve to operate the cameras (and a few takes on jumping off the falls). It took us about an hour to hike up the river along the river bed, but only about 15-20 minutes along his route.

Thanks, for the feedback, NMG. It's posts like this that make this board useful. I would like to check out the Nicoya Peninsula on our next trip to CR. 20+ trips to Costa Rica, and never made it out to the peninsula (except for an afternoon on Isla Tortuga.)
