all commercial airliners have "walk around" O2 bottles and masks all ready attached. Newer aircraft have O2 generators rather than O2 Bottles that only "work after the mask is pulled and a pin strikes the generator and it "burns: producing O2 they typically last 30-45 minutes. A jet liner in an emergency decent can descend in excess of 10,000 ft per minute. O2 is not required . at or below 12,500 ft. Bobby retired Airline Maintenance |

A friend of mine was flying a Saab 340 into a hub airport. The airport was surrounded by a blob of nasty, nasty thunderstorms. The Captains of all of the other Saabs in the fleet, that were flying into the hub during the same inbound push, chose to hold and wait until the storms moved away from the airport. My friend... Being young and bold, found a little corridor through the storms that he thought he could slip through and land on time at the airport. That 10 minutes shook the hell out of the airplane and resulted in some pretty wild maneuvers. Fortunately, he landed safely, and the landing was as smooth as glass. The passengers, who only remembered that slick landing, thought they had the best pilot on the planet. When they saw that all of the other flights didn't make it in on time to make their connections, the passengers were sure that my buddy was the best pilot on Earth. Later that evening, I'm at the bar with him and his first officer, and we are drinking heavily. My friend finally said to his first officer, "Do you realize how lucky we are to be alive?" The first officer said, "I still can't believe it. Let's NEVER do anything that stupid again." They are both good people, and they never took a chance like that again. But all of those passengers probably still believe that their pilots took care of them and were the best. Most of the Flight Attendants are not covered by their Health Insurance with the airline, for any injuries incurred while handling baggage. Plus since any injury can be seen as a worker's comp issue, the airlines have rules that forbid the flight attendant to assist. |

Kinda off-topic but: SAAB also makes a heckuva car. Due to poor marketing/poor sales, they left the US market but a used one is still a good choice. |
