Just found this fare on http://delta.com $479 from Los Angeles to San Jose direct. If you don't mind taking the red eye. Leaves at 11:15 p.m. on August the 28th, arrives at SJO the morning of the 29th at 6:07 a.m. Returns on Sept. 4th and leaves at 7:31 a.m. If you have not booked your ticket, now may be a great time for the Labor Day festivities in San Jose and Jaco.

I'm about to take this flight next week. Not crazy about the return departure time but the direct flight is a good deal.

It does cause you to get up kinda early but I have plenty of guys that do it. Maybe they will add another flight soon.

there is a positive ime on these red eyes from LA
if you can sleep a little you get to start a new full day in SJ once you land
but normally i need a few hours sleep after i lose my nuisance nut
last time i got in at 10pm on an avianca flight and while my clock was more normal initially i felt the week i usually take went by much faster since i lost that first day
my biggest issue w delta is they smash you into economy and if you are tall it is almost impossible to move so you need to pay the 80 or so for the 4" of leg room upgrade

I've only taken Taca/Avianca from LA, and the airline is fine, if you can get the direct flight. My last trip, I had to stop in San Salvador on the return and that was a miserable pain in the ass. The whole carry-on customs search is beyond stupid. I did manage to get the legroom upgrade on one leg on Delta. But that early return is tough if you are coming from Jaco, which means I am gonna stay one night in San Jose so I don't kill my Saturday night. Monday morning return. I don't mind the red-eye down there at all.

unfortunately avianca no longer flies a direct from LA. delta only started theirs when avianca stopped their direct.
there are several 7 hour legs that aren't too bad to salvador and guatemala but if you want to bring anything back with you it is necessary to buy it on the way down and pack is in your check on. personally i don't mind it that much although the old 604/605 direct on avianca was my go to for a while.

Yup, Delta is the only direct flight now. Most guys do not go to San Jose on the last night. You dont really save much time. 1:10 from Jaco to SJO.
