I am writing this from South Beach Hotel on the evening of 1-29-2014. I stayed a Cocal yesterday, but they were filled up today, so I moved down the beach. Here's my thoughts on South Beach:
Positives 1. It is only $55 for CRT members (but unless you emphasize that you are CRT, they will want to charge you $90+). 2. The young man at the front desk during the day is very helpful. 3. There is a nice little brook running through the property. 4. No chica fee.
Negatives 1. This hotel is way at the south end of the beach. There is a 15 min walk to get anywhere, and about 30 min walk to Cocal. So plan on taxis. 2. The rooms are old, but generally clean. However there is no closet. The bathroom window has only a screen, so you need to close the bathroom door to keep in the air conditioned air. 3. I am not sure I would want to eat at the restaurant, and you can't count on it being open when they say it is (Their front office says they are open to 10 p.m, but when I tied to buy a soda from them at 9:45 p.m., the restaurant told me they were closed...when I could see the soda refrigerator right there and accessible). They do not have vending machines. 4. My tica guest said it was mostly nicas and dominicas who went there.
Summary: You get what you pay for. If it was convenient, I might be willing to tolerate its general weariness, but it is out of the way. I don't expect to return.
