Since these questions are frequently asked - and answered - I'll be brief - candidly, if I liked the "search" function better, I'd direct you there, but on this site its difficult - however there is a TON of info on and about Jaco, so give it a shot - the following is based on my own experiences and opinion.

Surprisingly (b/c I'm not the greatest Jaco fan) I'd tell you to go there - see the place - its the closest beach to San Jose, and with the new highway, you can make it there in 2 hours or even less - the bus is cheap - like $6 - and ther are private drivers who can take you - if you want o go that rout, contact Puravidatransport via PM on this site.

The beaches are not packed - Jones Beach or Coney Island its not - but there are better ones in CR, just not as close to San Jose

I think you will find Jaco somewhat expensive to eat, and hot - and somewhat dusty and dirty - but its worth going to see, if only to say you've seen it - if you like it, you can stay longer this trip or next.

Now as to your other question - Jaco is not known for its daytime action; while some chicas hang out at certain hotels pools, but that's really hit or miss - if that's what you want to do, I'd tell you to forget it - the action is at night namely at the Cocal hotel - go for the day - buy a round trip, and you will be back in SJ with plenty of time to - well, you know  - lots better venues than Jaco.

Should you take a girl - frankly, in your case - I assume you are new or relatively new to Costa Rica - I'd say no - you can go one day w/out it and if you do as I suggest, you will have time when you get back. NEVER TRAVEL WITH A WORKING GIRL UNLESS YOU REALLY KNOW THEM - and I don't mean that you secessioned with them a time or two, or they were "recommended" by the creepy guy sitting next to you at the bar.

If you don't know the girl fairly well, even though its only for the day, its a bad idea to just pick some random girl (especially from the Delrey or Key Largo) and travel with her - believe me - they can be real PITAS, and if you no speekee spanee, and they no habla the englez - its another receipe for if not disaster - just a pain in the ass day.

+1

And most likely, the chica will be using her cell phone constantly during the entire trip :x
The first time I went to Jaco, many years ago, the chica was constantly on her cell phone, and after awhile I wanted to throw the phuckin thing in the ocean!

Depending on what time of day you arrive in Jaco, there's plenty of moderate adventuring to do (ATV w/guide, zipline [I think], hanging at Clarita's, etc.), then a nap, then the evening's adventures. I think the beach is once-over-lightlly and then done. Your definition of a beach scene prevails, natch.

if your only interested in sex stay in San Jose.Scuba is not a fan of Jaco but offers some fair advice.
If you decide to go daytime action exists but is hit /miss there is a little hotel by beatle bar that charges $25/hr.
There are many more things to do in and not far from jaco but a day trip wont cut it and if your on a budget or cheap don't leave SJO.
I have invited girls to join me for a day or 2 and NEVER had a bad experience but I have known them for 8 years.
Check it out and enjoy.

Sure - you make my point better than I - key is you knew them for a long time vs picking up some random chica and giving it a go - your way, success - the other - most times a receipe for disaster :)

Jaco is worth the trip for the nightlife and IMHO, the food, but I would at least do a night or two. The beach is mediocre at best and the water is a bit too rough (and dirty) to swim. As the other posters have said, there really isn't much to do in the daytime except for the things you could have done out of SJ (rafting, zip lines, ATV tours, etc.).

Even with the relatively short travel times (and be advised that an accident on the road can double or triple those), if you only have a day, stay in San Jose.
