Does anyone know what happened to the Freebird`s web site? It seems to have disappeared.

No idea. Whois shows the domain as being valid, no expiration anytime soon. Stayed there last month, no issues. You might want to call Dennis and give him a heads up.

stayed there 2 nights ago. asked the owner about getting a taxi early in the morning to the airport and was told you must call the night before as there are no taxis that early in the morning, 6 am. he said he would call for me and the prices have went way up, could go as hi as 38 bucks. I said ok, guess that's the deal. go out to the street at 10 till and there are taxis every were, so I ask one how much to the airport, he says 20 and I say lets go. guess the owner gets a kick back.

Surprised to hear that about Dennis. Alot of wiggle room with your particular fact pattern.

Important also is you say two nites ago--you mean you were leaving Saturday or Sunday morning at 0600?

Clear that up and then I'd like to hear HIS version and not everyone else's theories.

As a BTW, Whois was mentioned above. This can be a valuable tool to find out stuff about Websites (which ones are taken, which are available, how to get more notice for a site [SEO, or Search Engine Optimization]) and even look up your own IP address: http://whois.net/

came up from the beach Saturday, came up in a private shuttle with some people to the Marriot, was not planning on staying there as I called freebird Friday to get a room. Got a local taxi from the marriot and he got lost so I called and the owner picked up the phone and tried to tell me how to get there, told him I have not been in this city in 20 years, he talked the taxi driver in. I think when I said I have not been there in 20 years he thought he had a mark. I only stayed Saturday night, had an early flight sunday morning.

You are talking about apples and oranges. The taxi company that does the airport runs (orange NOT red taxis) do require a call the night before and since they now run on the meter, it can be expensive if you run into a lot of traffic, which at 6am can happen as rush hour starts early in San Jose. I see nothing wrong with what the owner did.... On the other hand, a $20 fare to the airport is NOT on a meter.

I`ve stayed at the Freebird many times and Dennis has always had Oscar pick me up and take me to the airport and it`s always $30 which is the going rate. Only one time Oscar wasn`t in town and he had a another taxi take me to the airport it was still $30. I always tell Dennis the day before to arrange for a taxi and there is no way in my mind he is getting any kind of kick back. Dennis is a helpful and will do anything to make your trip better, all you have to do is ask.

Just playing "Buster" here but, CaptainD, we have a whole Forum listing many good drivers, and, of course, special praise for Bros PVT and OLD. One common characteristic: advance notice. If this trip just jumped up on you, hey, OK--luck of the draw. OTOH If you knew in advance...

The orange taxis are based at the airport... why would anyone call them for a san jose pickup? From downtown san jose its `15kc maximum.
