was able to get the exchange rate for the Colons and there are some specifics that go into getting that ordered. Since it is an 'exotic' currency the minimum that must be ordered is $250 US dollars and the estimated exchange rate is .0022449 as of today 09/13/13. That means we divide the US Dollar by that rate and come up with 1$ US= 445.45 Colons. It will take 5-7 business days for pr |

That is a BAD exchange rate. If you want colones, give your dollars to the teller at the little Bank of San Jose branch in the corner, inside of the departure (upper) level of the SJO airport. You'll get a good, fair exchange rate. Their exchange rate today is 495 : $1US. They have pretty good hours at that airport branch, but they're NOT open in the middle of the night. Make sure that your dollars are in good shape, with no tears, markings or other signs of abuse. Nobody in CR likes rough-looking U.S. currency. |

Horrible. You are giving away 10% of your money. That's about the same rate you get at the currency exchange in the baggage claim area. Forget exchanging at home. Exchange when you get there (at a bank, not in the airport currency exchange windows) or use ATM's to withdraw colones. Current rate is about ¢495 per dollar (or $0.00202 per colon) http://indicadoreseconomicos.bccr.fi.cr ... nilla.aspx |

Orange..... It looks like he tried to delete his original post one minute after he posted it, because of the wrong forum. But you and I posted our replies before his delete happened. The result looked like a double-posting. |

Rate changes daily. The bank at the airport departure level upstairs will give you that day's BAC San Jose (private bank) rate. Here's a breakdown of the different banks in Cr. All are around 495-496. http://indicadoreseconomicos.bccr.fi.cr ... nilla.aspx Notice Global Exchange which is the company who runs those exchange windows in the baggage claim. 440... crooks. And they get lots of business from unknowing tourists. |

MasterPago just gave me 506 for a recargo. I know it's a pittance, but still. |

I believe my 1st trip to CR was about 12 or 14 years ago and I remember the exchange rate being just about 500:1(give or take a small amount). It's STILL about 500:1. Pretty stable I'd say. |

My first trip to Costa Rica on Labor Day 2001 the exchange rate was 35,000 for $100. First night at the SJMarriott then moved closer into town and paid $45 at the Presidente. |
