For you chicago guys, Avianca has begun service Chicago/ San Jose for $519.00.
Seems like a decent price.

avianca formerly taca/lacsa is a lot different imo.
out of LA they immediately stopped the non stops and while its not a huge deal otw down, it is a big deal as far as purchases made in CR coming back.
i had never stopped in Guatemala going back and was told by CR vendors at the airport that they would take away any bottles of alcohol purchased in CR. i didn't actually see it happen to anyone but i didn't buy any to find out. i like bringing back some 20yr centanario for friends to try. oh all right i don't share it  they did make us get off the plane and walk the airport w our carry on doing full search again. stupid and a pain in the ass but i guess its all on the US customs anyway.
avianca also didn't serve alcohol on the way down. they said it was morning and while it was 1am i tend to like a stiff drink or two to fall asleep on the red eye.
might be small things for some but i'm trying delta non stop this time fwiw.

Yes, but the times are lousy with overnight layovers.

I have been using Frontier out of Denver if you can get there easy, they leave at 11:55pm and get to SJO at 6:00am unfortunately nothing is open in baggage claim but at least you have the whole day to play.

Avianca route out of chicago used to be the Taca through Guatemala, they just rebranded it and changed the stop to Salvador.

Personally loved the 3am departure which put me in SJO at 9:30 am. Departure was even better... 5:30pm departure, in Chicago at midnight..

Do not know why anyone would consider it now with these HORRIBLE times

Leave Chicago at 3pm, arrives SJO 9:55pm.
Leave SJO 6:27am   What are they thinking :?: :?:

I just did the 3am from Chicago and the 5:30 back both through Guatemala.

The worst part was the damn Guatemala commercials played over and over on the screens in the plane.

If you can sleep on a plane it gives you pretty much a whole day on each side of the trip. The flight to SJO was nearly empty and I actually laid across the whole row and slept like a baby.

It was awfully nice having a couple of unrushed sessions on departure day.
