Have stayed at HDR, Dunn Inn, Amistad, and my favorite SL. The Amistad and Dunn Inn rooms have seemed to smell the least from vestigial smoke. The balcony rooms on the top floor of the HDR smelt very strongly of smoke and we had to move from the room we had reserved in the Mansion wing of the SL to another due to the heavy and lingering smoke smell. Of course it is impossible to keep guests from smoking in rooms, but why not designate some rooms as smoke free with a notice that if the room is smoked in there will be an additional cleaning charge, put up smoke detectors, take away the ash trays and stop selling cigarets in the rooms? ![]() ![]() |

Taz, I have sent this message via email to my Hotel Manger and Head of Housekeeping for ideas on addressing this. This is not the first request to visit this issue. I know we can do something. Will make an announcement soon regarding our decision. Thanks, Bill Sportsmens Lodge |

It is a valid concern from non smokers. from the Presidente web page: Non Smoking Policy: Due to Costarican law, city hotels are non smoking facilities. While not specific I believe they ban smoking in all of their rooms. I do not know if they charge if you smoke in the room but many hotels who have non smoking rooms do charge a "cleaning" fee if they find you smoked in the room. |

Its a simple fix, I will not stay in a hotel that does not have smoke free rooms. I hate the smell of smoke that saturates the room from a smoker. |

From the point of view of simple economics: Smokers represent a very small percentage of total occupancy to lodging establishments, but they also represent a very high percentage in terms of costs due to things like burn holes in carpets, burn holes in sheets and mattresses, burn marks on furniture and the need to more frequently change draperies when they are permeated with the smell...and of course the cost of rebuilding an establishment after some fool falls asleep drunk with a burning cigaret and burns the whole damn place down. I know they have to sleep somewhere and I'm fine with that....as long as its somewhere else. My philosophy is that all of life is about avoiding the idiots, but that is not always possible and, at least so far, I have chosen to stay at establishments in SJ that have this problem rather than places like the Presidente that may be smoke free, but are also free of any night life. |

Thank Heavens for Hotel Owners like Bill of the Sportsman Lodge and Managers like Guy Grand of the Mona Lisa who truly care about thier guests. I understand the ownership at the HLH is the same way. |
