My first time to Costa Rica. I am looking for a realiable driver for San Jose airport pickup to Sportman's lodge. Who or which company you recommend? Or should I stick to hotel pick up which cost $30? Thank you.

Price is right. But you won't like it if they have three of four drop offs before they get you to the gulch. Lot of gringo hotels between the airport and SL. An hour or easily more if they have to keep getting off and on Rt 1 in traffic. Kind of the luck of the draw.

Check the classified section on this board for Oneluckydog--does it for tips only--or catch a pirate for $15.

It may be good luck on my part, but I have used the shuttle nine times from the airport, and only one time was there another passenger. Eight of nine times, straight from the airport to my hotel. I arrive on JetBlue at approximately 1:00pm.

PVT, Steve is the best wheel man in CR. American. Was a fellow monger. Knows all the short cuts. Will even show you around when you arrive. Knows most of the girls. Fluent spanish. A well of information for a first timer. Highly recommended. You hear stories about the other guys no showing at the airport, you never hear stories about Steve no showing at the airport. Best, hands down, it's not even close.

I think $30 for his car and $35 for his SUV. He also will take you by the grocery store for anything you need and or pharmacy and he knows where most all the ex-pats live if your friends with them. He is a wealth of information and very good spanish for negociate w/chicas.

Nope...incorrect :)

I suspect you are fairly new and may not even be aware of this option, but for less than $2.00, the best deal is to take the public bus right in front of the airport to downtown - maybe not for your first trip, and mabye not at night, but its easy, its real cheap, and you can take a taxi to your hotel from the station for a couple of dollars more - so for less than $5.00 all in, you save $20 - 25 and its a great option to consider :)

I'm not sure who's manning the front desk at SL lately but I've always dealt with Manfred or one of the girls and just asked them to arrange to have a driver pick me up and that's always worked out fine for me. Typically about $30 + tip.

I almost always do the bus like Scuba describes. Never a problem.

Most of the time I "hoof it" from the terminal at Ave 2 y Calle 12-14 into the gulch with my duffle bag.

The money that I save goes to the girls.......they love it and so do I.

:) :) :)

Or food, or drinks, or whatever. Its easy, safe, and you cannot beat the price, even if you take a cab from the bus station - again, maybe not for the first trip or two, or if your arrival is late at night.

Hey, Smoothie.....you have had almost every option from the cheap (bus) to the more expensive - with the exception of walking, or hitching - described - time to thank all who had the courtesy to reply vs telling you to do a search, since this question has been asked many times.

(My peeve is someone asks a question - lets say one previously asked many times in the past - rather than tell the person to just do a search, guys step up to the plate with really good, solid info, which I endorse <I always thought the board somewhat rude a few years ago when almost every question was met by "do a search" - hell asking some of the same questions over and over is the nature of message boards, plus I've not found the search function on this particular board to be all that user friendly> but I always like to see the OP come back and thank those who responded - on the few times I've had questions, I've always tried to remember this).
