Leave early, all lanes on the Autopista del Sol Rt 27 will be one way eastbound (toward San Jose) and closed westbound from noon till 8 pm to accomadate what they anticipate to be a ton of returning vacationers. See the Tico Times article for the alternate pain in the ass routes of days gone by since the Autopista del Sol opened.

But, if you have no choice and must go then, add a few hours to your ETA, especially by bus. First timers, go slow, enjoy the mountain views, but be real careful passing, no passing yellow lines for oncoming often are ignored. http://www.ticotimes.net/Current-Editio ... ry-04-2013

So they are closing a major highway because of high traffic? I dont follow the logic.

Closoing it for outbound only, leaving all eastbound lanes (to Sj) open. They do this on occasion on sundays on peak travel days but unless you visit the Autopista del Sol website in Spanish, you don't know. This time it got published in the Tico Times.

I was driving back to SJ one Sunday and was unaware of the closure and it was the wierdest feeling because I reached a certain point, like a little west of the Orotina exit and I thought look at all these crazy ticos driving on the wrong way on the wrong side. Didn't figure it out until I saw a couple of cop cars with their mars lights on at strategic places.

Similar logic allows a toll at certain hours during the day on the road from San Jose to the airport (PAn AM Hwy??) - the toll is really low; they can't collect all that much, and it can really slow traffic, which is heavy in that location to begin with.

While I'm on the subject - unless things have changed in the last few months - Costa Rica takes 15+ years and gods know how much money to build the San Jose - Jaco autopista, but you would never know it (unless you knew via previous knowledge) because there are no signs on the main road from SJO to downtown San Jose directing you - the road has been finished, what, 2 years+ - and still - not one sign on the main route to and from the Airport - If its not the Pan American Highway, sorry for not referring to it by the correct name - to me - muy tico be damned - no excuse for not marking how you get to it - I know Costa Rica has an "aversion" to things as simple as street addresses, but this thing with no signage has always confused and bothered me.

Not the end of the world if you have to take the "old" route to Jaco - but the new toll road is much better - and safer :)

True and even worse that there are no signs from the airport to the Autopista del Sol, even more complicated, and not easy for a gringo in a rent car, unless you want to go all the way downtown and pick it up at Sabannah.

Post subject:  Re: Driving to the Beach Sunday Jan 27 Feb 3 & 10-beware

Update: It's also closed west bound on the next 3 Sundays: Jan 27, Feb 3, and Feb 10, 2013 from noon to 6 pm.

Found it on their fancy website which also has their emergency Tel # for car breakdowns, 2588-4040, but not a map of the pista.

I was looking for entrance and exits info, but no damn map.
