No problem...we'll go the back way and hit the Jaco highway. Not too much longer time wise unless everyone else has the same ideas. Most go through Heredia which is a LOT longer.

A regular cabbie wouldn't do that for you, he'd be in line bumper to bumper on the designated detour route happy, happy. PVT #1. Steve, is that road/route a viable/better option during a normal day rush hour?

Are you talking about Rt 27? I get there via Garrita.

Is this the highway from the SJO airport to the sportsmans? Ugh

I just picked up a couple of CRT members from Amistad and headed to the airport. They now how traffic flowing in both directions, although it is slow going across the remaining baily bridges. Drive and ride safe.

I have started using 27 almost exclusively when I come into San Jose now...forget that madhouse nonsense on Ruta 1. Way I do it is cut off at Coyol and use the new bypass to cut over to 27. From the airport, use the road that goes directly behind the airport and cut through to San Rafael to hit 27. Cost an extra $1.50 in tolls but it is about the same time (1/2 hour) from the airport. I'd definitely suggest either of those routes to avoid Ruta 1 anytime...

Used that route two times on Thursday and it took exactly 1/2 an hour from the airport but then once we got into San Jose, it was 45 minutes to the gulch thanks to the Caja protesters that had Central completely blocked



Yes, they have one lane of traffic flowing in each direction...did that on Thursday morning. Why just have traffic messed up going in one direction when you can mess it up going in both directions?

Steve: Is there an entrance ramp at that intersection of Rt 27 that goes the other way--i.e., toward the beach and not downtown?

Yes, from the Coyol cutoff, you can head into San Jose or to Jaco, either way. When I take someone from the airport to Jaco, use that route hence the ability to cut $25 off the price because it saves the 1/2 hour into San Jose and the 1/2 hour to get back out to where the Coyol road hits 27 not to mention the traffic headaches. Same coming back from Jaco, exit at the Coyol exit and I'm at the airport 5 minutes later.

Steve: Often I go direct to Quepos but I have been getting to Rt 27 via Garrita which as you know you get there by going away from San Jose on Rt.1. Your way to Rt 27 seems alot shorter.

I've been looking at internet maps for 30 minutes trying to figure out your way but I am confused.

Do I get on Rt 1 headed toward SJ and then there is an exit with a sign that says Coyal or San Rafael? If so, how far down Rt 1 from the airport?

No, the route I'm talking about is away from San Jose as well. From the airport, take Rt.1 away from the airport toward San Ramon. Just after the construction (just past Dos Pinos) where you get off the service road and back on the main Rt. 1, there is a pair of Bailey bridges. Go under those and exit to the right which will circle you back around to cross those Bailey bridges. Just go straight (around a traffic circle 180 degrees) and that will take you to Rt. 27. There is a traffic circle there and you take it 90 degrees and to the right and it will put you on 27 going to Jaco. When I come into town, I go on across 27 and enter going into San Jose. As usual, there are no signs

On this Google map (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=san+jose ... 12&layer=t) follow Rt. 27 out of San Jose then look where 27 and 1 come pretty close together after the airport and Valley del Sol golf course just past Guacima and that road that cuts over to Rt.1 is the one I'm talking about. Only been open a few months. Conversely, if you follow Rt. 1 away from the airport toward San Ramon, the road I'm talking about goes south from Rt. 1 after Condominio Vila de Lago but before INCAE Business School. Should be marked in a green line as that map shows traffic slowdowns and that road is always a green.

My other route leaving the airport to Jaco is to take the road the goes to the freight operations and into Alajela and take 122 which goes directly behind the runway and continues to Ojo de Agua where I turn right on 124 to hit Rt.27. Only reason I use that instead of the other way is the construction on Rt.1 in front of Dos Pinos where you have to exit onto the service road, reducing it to one lane which often has long slowdowns. When Rt.1 construction is finished, I'd use that Coyole cut through all the time.

Side note: Coyol is where there is a Ritive station I use, very good and short lines most days.

Hope that helps. I think this route would be a lot better than continuing on to Garrita.

Thnaks alot Steve. I am going to hve to update a post I made 6 months or so ago re: the way to get to the beach/Rt27 from the airport was via La Garrita. But that google map link you have is bad--takes you to SJ, California.

6 months ago, that route was probably the best. They opened up this road when the sinkholes opened up in Rt. 1 but no one seemed to know about it. I made SL to the airport the day the sinkhole opened on both sides in 35 minutes but cabbies were saying how much farther it was.

I hit the link from my post and took me to the right map. Must be something in Google that knows I'm in Costa Rica and assuming you are in the US, it directs you to California. Shortened the URL so try this one...definitely say San Jose Costa Rica.
