You know, I've always considered bringing a car to Costa Rica for less than 90 days. Can you ship a car to CR, spend 90 days there driving on US tags (as long have valid insurance) and then ship it back. I was considering going back to CR for an extended stay, and paying the 1100 shipping each way would be worth it to me to have a car while there.

Yes you can drive a car with U.S. tags for 90 days. On the 90th day, or before, you must either nationalize ( license the car with CR plates, etc) or remove the car from Costa Rica. You may apply for an extension which I forget the length but believe it is an additional 90 days. Then the car must either be nationalized or removed permanently.

There is a couple of drawbacks for bringing a car down on a tourist Visa. Your U.S. tag becomes and easy mark for banditos. Also, if you are from a state in the U.S. that doesn't require a front license plate, the traffic cops is gong to stop you every time.
