Planning a 2 week trip to SJ for the last week of Dec. to first week of Jan. Doing it on a budget....never stay at Castillo. If I'm correct you get a 35% discount if you are a crt vip and paying cash. My question is how are the standard room and are they only locating in the mansion. The reason I'm asking is because the courtyard seem like a very nice part of the hotel to stay.

cheers,
Attila

I believe the economy standard rooms are 5 or 6 rooms in the old mansion section. The rooms on the first floor are standard, smaller rooms, and some don't have windows. On the second floor, there are two standard rooms (8 & 10) as well.

The annex, next to the courtyard, has the deluxe rooms... with either one or two full-sized beds (if my memory) serves me correct. The annex rooms are all designed the same.... long and narrow. The deluxe rooms in this section also have a kitchenette (sink, fridge, microwave and toaster oven). Some floors on the bottom tier of rooms facing the courtyard tend to get damp. Even though, it never bothered me, the noise from the breakfast crowd in the courtyard bothers some guys who stay in the rooms facing in that direction.

Castillo was "my home away from home" for many years when I traveled to CR. Darren and his crew were always very good to me. And although, it may not be the fanciest hotel in the gulch, Castillo more than makes up for it with its character and friendliness.
