Wondering what the status of this hotel is? Never stayed right 'downtown' on any of my trips...just curious

It has been a while, but I believe everything is the same...

GREAT location, 1 block from HDR/KL

Cheap rooms, around $50

VERY smoky! Every room I was in, very smoky, and I smoke. I really believe it is from all the "Pai Gow" players

Fat man will hold his hand out to you for everything from taking your luggage up the stars (because elevator is broken AGAIN) to telling you where the bed is located when it is in plain sight. Remote won't work, he will huff and puff to go down to fix, another hand extended.

If you want to save some $, go for it. Otherwise, stay elsewhere!! That being said, if everything else you want is booked, it is better than staying home. 8)

Stay somewhere else. The Morazon is not worth it, whatever the pluses are .

Pai-Gow players left years ago and with the no smoking in public areas now in effect that is not longer a problem.

Morazon has it boosters and detractors and there appears to be no middle ground. I know guys who stay there every trip and would not consider any place else and then there are guys who would never stay there. Very much like the varying opinions you see posted about the Del Rey.

No question if you are looking for reasonably priced accommodations right at ground zero it is the place. If you are looking for luxury it is not the place.

Jr Suite rooms are large and reasonably nice. However they are on the 5th floor and with the elevator situation you may have to walk it a few times. They have a new website and free wireless internet. They have lowered the price of the Jr. Suites to $80 if you stay 3 nights on a row which is not a bad deal. Yes you will make 2+ trips down to the front desk to switch TV remotes. But the main reason I don't like to stay there is having to keep up with the safe key. Anyone who has stayed there lately know if they have upgraded to combination safes? It's been 3 years since I have stayed there.

Last time I stay there they gave me a room facing ave 1. The street noise was unbearable. I was only getting a few hour sleep a night. There were issues with roaches in the room. Asked to be move to another room..which they didn't do. Great location but will never stay there again.

cheers,
Attila

As ID posts, the place falls into a love it or hate it situation - I've stayed there many times (for whatever reasons - perhaps going back to staying at the Presidente when they had a sane guest policy    - I've always preferred that part of town)

And yeah, the place can be maddening; how f-ing tough is it to get a remote that works; to keep an elevator working (plan on at least one down day if you are there a week   ) and as of May, Hank, the safes - at least the one in my room - had a key vs combination/keypad. Too, some guys can't stand the always there bell hop, "Rickey Ricardo" (not his real name, btw) - and the rooms, at least the standard ones, could use an upgrade. So I get it why some hate the place :) - and unlike some, I respect your right to do so.

All that said, and freely acknowledged, if you like that part of town, you cannot beat the location. I stay there b/c they leave you alone, and don't hassle you about guests (and they call after every one, to see if everything is OK, before handing back the guests Cedula/ID - the Prez, for all their sactimonious bull shit, never did, in all the many years I stayed there  )

Attila, with the exception of the higher floor rooms at the Holiday Inn (not an option at present with a $75 + tax guest fee    ), I've never had a really quiet one in San Jose - the place is just loud, what with the f-ing car alarms going off the loud motorcycles, and various other traffic and street noise; hotels in SJ, they never heard of double pained windows, I guess    So Morazon is no worse than many others - OTOH, no excuse for vermin in the room (other than what we might bring in - sorry sorry :P :P   :) ) or a dirty room for that matter.

Candidly, 'Rivers, you might prefer the Sportsmans, or HLH - more of a frat house, guys at the bar atmosphere - Morazon seems to attract those of us who want to pick and choose company, and those not needing a wingman (but perhaps that's my perception based upon many stays there, and meeting many of the guests :) :) )

yes, the rooms are smoky, yes they havent ugraded the furniture or the beds in the 10 years i have been going, yes ricardo has his hand out ALL the time, yes the wifi is spotty, yes the rooms are noisy, either in the front from the traffic, or in the back till after 2am facing key largo, yes the food is blah, yes you have roaches, yes, the remote doesnt work. the elevator quits working , they have no fridge, no coffee maker, no view, a/c is noisy, the sunday desk clerks made her b**bs way too big,
there are much better accomodations out there, i hate the place, and never want to be caught dead there.

BUT, like a moth to a flame, for the convenience, convenience, and convenience, I will never book there again, after this next time.

You said it well, Rico. It's been 7 years since my last stay at Morazan....

I stay there on most of my trips and it is all about location. There is no more smoking allowed so that isn't a problem anymore and yes Ricardo is still there and sometimes the elevator doesn't work but I still like the place. The suites have been upgraded and it is quiet a walk up and the safe still needs a key. But we will all be there for halloween.

I used to stay there for the location, and their old transportation guy was great. Maybe 3 or 4 trips. Then I realized I only end up at the DR once a night, and spent the rest of my time on the other side of Morazan Park at HLH, NF, or SL. I also realized a cheap cab ride beats walking one block with a chica while being begged for change, drugs, and cigars. I pop out of the DR, and am in a cab before they even get "Hey Mister!" out of their mouths. The last and final time I stayed there was awful. They hit all of the above mentioned issues in one stay. The elevator, the hot water went out, the remote, Ricardo being Ricardo, some crack head busted out a window, the guards beat the piss out of him. It was a really bad time.

Few more bucks a night and I am at the HLH.

I would stay at the Morazan again if I came in last minute, with no reservations. That's about it.

I stayed there many years ago and while not a first rate hotel I found it adequate and was comfortable there. Guess it all comes down to your habits. If you are finding yourself over in the neighborhood of SL and HLH, might as well keep it convenient.
