Orbitz has a sale for the Morazan for $35/night. Has anyone stay there recently? Any new intel will be greatly appreciated.

cheers,
Attila

I stayed there in Jan. Some of the rooms are alright. I used to stick up for this place--- but they really jerked us around last time. Personally I would never stay there again, too many better choices. On the other hand-- the location is very good-- right next to Key Largo and across the street from DR. So for $35, it's probably not a bad deal. I used to like room #410 & 415.

+1 on it being a shithole and Castillo being a better option. I don't speak Greengo well so not sure about the rest.

I have stayed there 10 times over the past few years, so +/- 50 room nights; likely more, now that I think about it - I have a relationship going back to Jose Troyer the former manager -

I like the place b/c of the location, the layed back, non judgemental attitude, the staff, as well as the price - I normally - for a standard room w/ a balcony (sorta...) lately pay $51 or $53 - so $35 is a great price - but you pay it - IMHO - for its location, not for the decor of the rooms - for whatever reason(s) I've always stayed in that section of town - for years at the Presidente (they had a much better breakfast, but I don't come to CR for the food  ), now I stay at the Morazon.

For a $50/night, its well priced, but depends what you want - for me, for my needs, its great - I have experienced the dredded elivator failure, but they have always had my reservation, at the rate discussed. I call them directly and don't book online.

For those who like a bar, or need to meet wingmen, HLH or SL is probably a better choice - and it bothers me not at all that many dislike the place - makes it easier for me to get a room  - the $35/night rate is very fair.

Will agree that the Castillo is a good option too, just geographicaly undesirable if you prefer the section the Morazon is located.

I have been staying there since 2002 well over 50 times. location is the best for girls, gaming and drinking. There are some issues on a lot of trips like the elavator, water and Ricardo but for $35 its a real deal . That is probably for a standard room so if the elavator is a problem get a room on the second floor. Like I said location bars Papi's across the street, Joeb's down the street. Horseshoe across the street and the DR & KL right there. I always get a suite and when the elavator goes down than that is a problem.

Yeah, I remember when the bar was on the first floor, and working chicas hung out there. Also, the sports book area was where the restaurant is now, on the second floor. It was actually a pretty good place to watch sporting events. They even served free popcorn. The front desk was where the office is now, near the computer. Buzzfla is right regarding the disadvantages and advantages.
You can't beat the location, but it does have its negatives.

I used to stay at Hotel Morazan, and then moved to Sportsmens after it opened its doors. Sportsmens suited my style better, and I had less need to be near the Blue Marlin and Key Largo. At the time, I was paying $40 a night at Morazan, so a rate of $35 is super. I enjoyed my time there, and did not hesitate to recommend the place to other travelers. Although, I agree with some of the posters above, that for roughly the same price, Hotel Castillo is a better selection. Castillo is a few blocks further from the Del Rey, but it is also closer to SL and the gringo-oriented MPs which are just a few steps away. Hotel Castillo also offers generous discounts for cash payments and longer stays.

Thanks for the info everybody. I went ahead and booked a standard double for $35.

I like the location, no need to cab to the DR at night and walking distance to the MPs during the day. Sometimes you get a woody in the middle of the night and the cure is just across the street. Will be down in CR 7/21.

Attila

edit: Nevermind misread post. Have no recent feedback other than 8 months ago I checked it out while staying elsewhere. Nothing seemed to have changed.

They charged me a few bucks each day to use the safe in the room last September. I thought that it was kinda "cheap" of them to nickel-and-dime their guests. The TV remote didn't work either. On balance, there are much better places to stay.
