I realize this place is beloved by most, but here's an honest assessment from my recent stay at the legendary Sportsmens Lodge. Flamers, drop a Viagra and light up, here goes...

Strengths:

1.   Great selection of girls. But really not much different than anywhere else
2.  Beautiful and competent bartenders
3.  Abundance of fellow mongers with which to connect

Weaknesses:

1.   The rooms. Or at least the cheap rooms. This doesn't exactly qualify as news or a surprise, but DO NOT underestimate the noise if you stay in the courtyard.   You can almost reach out from the doorway of these rooms to collect your drink at the bar now that they've remodeled what once was the lounge.   Some might see this as a plus but there is a sense your bedroom is almost public in these rooms

2.   The rooms.  The shower drain in my room backed up and with it came a nice clump of shaved hair.  Seems the reinvestment on this property is nil.

2.  The food.  Overpriced and disappointing every time I ate here.

This place is a step up from the Del Rey for newbie manger experience but I'm going to give the Hotel Little Havana or Freebird a try next time.

Not even a Member??? Sorry We always try to have 100% happiness..... How about buying a CRT VIP card so we know who you are...if you are?

Would not stay anywhere else. first because of the maids - the door men - the security - the front desk , second I enjoy the food, my favorite the the pork special, did I mention the excellent staff, the service, the bartenders, the waitresses, and most of all I enjoy pura vida just like it is....

Do you know why, because Bill and his crew works extra hard to please all of us CRT members and I would not consider staying anywhere else and have not for many many many years!

Literally watched this shit. The whole thing went a bit different. Manfred might be the most accommodating person in CR.

Monday May 31 2021 i went to the sportsmens lodge to have dinner. I told the young security guard that i would like to eat dinner there but i wasnt going to wear a mask when i was eating as they required at sportmen but at no other restaurants. He said he would check with the manager. He came back and he said the manager said it was ok. I entered and ate dinner. The waitress was ok with my not wearing the mask during dinner so i know the security guard had talked with someone. After dinner i left without consequence.

The next night on tuesday june 1 2021 i returned to have dinner with a friend at the sportsmen. Victor another security guard that has been there for years was policing tables for mask compliance. When he got to my table he told me i needed to put my mask on around my chin. I told him i wasnt going to do that because the manager said i didnt have to. I asked him whose rule that was and he said the police. I knew that was a big lie but they all say that there including the servers. I told him no other restaurants require that and that it had to be the policy of the owner. I said the owner can make what ever rules he wants because it is his property and likewise i can eat elsewhere if i dont agree but in this case the manager said i dont have to wear a mask and im not going to wear it.

Victor the security guard walked over beside the front desk behind a glass door and in a few moments walked back to my table with a little guy in glasses. I did not know who he was and had never seen him. He did not introduce himself or talk to me. Instead he shouted loudly at me: YOU ARE AN A......E... GET THE F....K OUT OF HERE. I found out later that this was little Man Fred the manager. He called the young security guy at the door to come in and physically throw me out. He was the same one i spoke with the previous night and he did not physically remove me because he remembered me and was apologetic and told me i was welcome back anytime.
They made me pay for the pina colada drink my friend had and i was just drinking a glass of water. I do not drink smoke or use drugs and never raised my voice a single time. I was not believing the names this little Man Fred was calling me. Nothing like this has ever happen in my 66 years on earth. I have always gone out of my way to avoid conflict. I was born and raised on a dairy farm in the Carolinas and have never been considered arrogant.
I dont know bill alexander the owner but what little i have heard about him was good. That is why I have reached out to him for several days now with no response.
Like i said the sportsmens is his property and he has every right to set the rules as he likes. I dont have to patronize if i dont agree. I have spent a lot of money staying there in years past.
This is all about being told indirectly by the manager i didnt have to wear the mask and then was agressively shouted at and insulted in every way possible by the same manager. There were several witnesses that will verify what i am saying as the truth. I hope there is some video of this too.

After speaking with the management at the Sportsmens Lodge, they confirmed that current policy requires wearing the mask over the face while in the common areas of the hotel. Customers who are seated in the restaurant must wear the mask around their neck while eating and drinking.

Although the government has not issued a written rule to require wearing the mask around the neck, the police who inspect the hotel have specifically required it.

Since the police could conduct an inspection at any time, management at the hotel will only provide service to customers who respect the mask requirements.

Please keep in mind that masking and sanitary restrictions are being vigorously enforced in Costa Rica by the police. While in many areas of the United States restrictions have been removed or eliminated, this is not the case in Costa Rica. Businesses are frequently inspected by the police, and respect for the rules is essential for staying open.

Management at the Sportsmens Lodge would like for customers to have a positive experience and enjoy their visit. All customers, including the fully vaccinated are reminded to wear a face mask while in the common areas of the hotel.

Please keep your mask while eating or drinking and follow the instructions of hotel staff who are serving you. Following their instructions, such as pulling the mask down around your neck while eating or drinking will ensure the hotel remains open for all of us to enjoy.

That seems pretty harsh. Is that only at the Sportsmens Lodge, or are the police enforcing this at the other local places like Taromina, Castillo, HLH, Poas, etc.?

Let's just say that the police here are not known for even handed enforcement. Each establishment makes its own risk assessment. A shutdown means a lengthy closure with no customers and no revenue while the taxes and obligations go on. Plus forced cancellation of hotel bookings and spoiled food. SL is quite clear about their expectations.

Just wear your god-damn masks so SL can stay open even if you do not agree and want to debate/philosophize it. One bad customer as anywhere in the world can shut a place down. Do it for the good of the whole to keep SM open.

As Boynton said police enforcement not uniform (where is it ever in this world?).

And if the mass produced masks bother your skin like they to do me get a gator or piece of soft cloth that you comfortably wear below the skin.

The police department building is very close to SL. Just up the street on Ave 13. Being so close they are just the low hanging fruit for law enforcement. They were strictly enforcing covid dictates everywhere early in the pandemic lockdowns but ran out of overtime funds to staff those efforts. So the establishments farther away from the police headquarters can risk allowing more freedom from the mask mandates and occupancy percentages.

We see the inspections all over Alajuela so it is not just a Sportsmen's problem. The police can pretty much do as they choose in CR and target any business that gives them a reason to do so. Shutdowns are not worth the costs in fines and revenue losses. Total bullshit, but as much as I hate them I wear my mask, and comply with the rules. It does seem that those that try and skirt the rules end up getting hammered. A few of our favorite places are no longer in business due to these intentional infractions. Hopefully, they will resurface elsewhere at some point, but the rules are certainly not business-friendly.

This is good to know. Is there a post someone can point me to with the current list of rules like this? I am sure there are a dozen threads discussing them, but I also imagine it's not uniform and has changed since the rules were first made many months ago.

What I have gathered so far that is still in place is:
1: There is a curfew. I am not sure if this is a city wide curfew or if it just means that establishments like SL have to close early every day (9pm?).
2: Restaurants and bars are limited to half capacity.
3: Now I know that if I am in a bar or restaurant I will need to be wearing a mask. Even while I am actually eating and drinking it will need to be around my neck.

If I am aware and expecting all this stuff ahead of time then I won't be surprised/disappointed and happily work with it.

I just got back from CR last week after being there for three months…here’s the post that I wrote on April 25…basically COVID cases started rapidly rising after Semana Santa and there was some problems at Taormina (some girls got into a fight in the street right out in front of the place)…after that the capacity was reduced back down in bars and restaurants to 25% and the curfew was moved back to 9pm.

April 25, 2021…I went to the Sportsmens around 630-7pm tonight to watch UFC fights, when I walked to the bar I had my mask down below my mouth -one of the younger security guards said you have to wear it fully covering your face when you are ordering a drink at the bar. Ok, no problem, ( I never had an issue before) then I sat down at a table took it off and started drinking my beer, then another security guard said it’s ok to take it down to drink but it needs to be worn regularly except you can pull it all the way down to your chin-you can’t take it all the way off. From what I was told the police came in around an hour before I got there and laid down the law about masks. From what I was also told (maybe rumors) but two girls were fighting with outside Taormina the other night which caused a scene. So I guess because of Taormina, the police are rousting the “other local hangouts” too. Just passing on the info. I also heard curfew is going back to 9pm either this week or next.

So right now, it is what it is…trust me it’s not the SL fault….the 9 pm curfew really sucks…not trying to discourage any business but unless you have been to CR a few times and know “your way around”..have contacts, a decent rotation, etc..I would honestly wait until around Halloween to go. Things should be much better by then.

Can't speak for SL but many of the local bars were basically no mask at table or bar in recent weeks. Walking through bar to bathroom etc about one third wear a mask and half of those were token masks around the chin. In the stores the mask is enforced strictly with hand sanitizer forced on you at entry. On the streets the mask is slipping more and more. People seem to be growing weary of the mask foolery but businesses have no choice. I must say the ticos show remarkable patience with the 9pm closures. It is hell in a bar to be sent home at 9pm but the bodegas will let you buy beer until 8:59 and you can see a sprinkling of red taxis around after 9 although the streets are largely empty.
