Here is the "official" CRT link: https://costaricaticas.com/news.php?id=601

DISCOUNTS GALORE on room rates and a new crew running the bar and eats. I was there during a "soft" opening the last part of March, 2012 and early April, 2012 and all things were fine, fine, fine.

New decor; new lunch and dinner menu; and new barristas.......ah.....civilization in San Jose: Just skip on over to the SL.....acquire a hussy.....bring her back....relax......; etc.

Blah, blah, blah! :D :D :D :D 8)

Why, "Thank you!" Zunbake3. I AM a GOOD Dooo Beeee. I have never been a DON'T BEEEEEEEEE!!!

Folks simply need to contact the Amistad and find out what great deals await: Matt is doing what he can to counteract the high costs of Air Fare....and doing so that hits his own bottom line. Granted, Amistad probably has it's own issues relative to the Sky High air costs.....but Matt (owner/operator) of Hotel La Amistad is doing what he can to help both himself AND CRT members.

Now's everyone's chance to check out just how comfortable the Amistad is....what with WIRED and wireless internet throughout the hotel (simply ASK for a cable for your room if you prefer WIRED internet); great FREE breakfast; great, mellow and non hound dog bar; a/c in 99% of the rooms; great location; great on site restaurant; great staff along with great service; blah, blah, blah. It is what it is. Buy the best and weep once..... 8) 8)

Make sure to take some ear plugs for the passing train. Last time there I checked out after less than 24 hrs.

Non-issue for me I sleep soundly. I live 75ft from tracks and the Freights go by several times a day and early. Can't remember the last time I even noticed.

I've always wondered about the folks here who obsess about HLA and the infamous commuter train. I've stayed there at least 10 times over the past 3 years and have never been bothered by it. However... I recently realized (after 3 years - doh!) the train is an issue on weekdays, due to it starting to run by the hotel between 5-6 AM. Especially because some conductors like to pull that airhorn cord 6-7 times as they approach that intersection.

On weekends though, seems to me they start much later and pass much less frequently.

If you're an early bird (like me), you'll shrug it off.

If you're a light sleeper, or you're the type who goes out all night until dawn (also like me, except I only do Fridays and Saturdays) then returns to the hotel to collapse into an alcohol- and poossay-induced trance during the day... you might have an issue with the train.

My advice: earplugs. Or a different hotel.

And yes, it is an awesome deal.

I don't think the guys were sounding the horn when they got to the intersection.........I think they waited until they got in front of my room.

I think that the complaints also come from the fact that two of the most popular rooms at LA--the big penthouses 310 and 312--both have lots of windows in a wall that directly faces the tracks, mere feet away in fact. So when the train comes you're gonna hear and feel it in those rooms. Stay in a part of the building that's away from the tracks, like the 200-series suites and a block of 300-series regular rooms, and the train is much diminished and not much of a problem, unless you're such a light sleeper that even the clickity-clack of chica heels bothers you.

Oh, Jesus Wept.

When it first started I thought (and felt) the same way. Then I decided to do something about these thoughts and feelings.

The roof at Amistad is so easily available it makes you (me) laugh. A couple (TWO dozen) of eggs lobbed on to the hooting SOB got it all out of my system. *shrug*

I do not hear SHIIIT now....and I stay, always, in the same room which is about 75feet....max....from the tracks.

What a bunch of cry Babi*s.....you can stay up all night and pay hookers $300 (that includes "propina") a throw but you can't sleep through a train horn? Incredible.......

that is a great deal on rooms at amistad, may the hotel be full don and matt
it is true that if you stay in the penthouses 310,311, 312 you experience it differently but it also depends on the driver. back when i used to stay at hotels on a regular basis i actually looked out the window of 311 and saw the conductor looking up as he was yanking his cord with a smile.
others seem to give it a light tap two or three times as they pass. i actually looked for a pellet gun as i also noticed the easy access to the roof top steven1 spoke of. in 312 you might want to check it out since its your emergency escape. a high powered salt pellet gun would put an end to the horn happy bastards.
personally i think it can be pretty easily overlooked by most when you consider all the positives about the hotel. think of the early horn as a wake up call to take another wack at your tln before she slips out the door.

Worst thing about La Amistad is that Rudy won't let me fish that cement trout pond in the lobby. I snuck a few casts last trip but no bites, next trip I am setting a trotline.

And don't go trying to swim in the CE-ment pond, Jethro. Unless it's with Ellie May. Look out! Here comes granny with her scattergun and her bottle of rheumatiz medicine. :D
