Never flown them either. They seem to be the bottom of the barrel airline plus I have heard there is less legroom than any airline. I am 6 foot 1 and have no desire to fly with my knees in my face to save a little money. I have looked at their schedules and they suck.

As some of the South Florida guys have said, Spirit is probably best only for those who can use the FLL airport, it's alternate direct-flight option to CR and other Latin American places. If you have to come from some other airport and connect in FLL, then they're not worth it.

I looked at Spirit because they had some good fares from Detroit, which is about 3.5 hrs drive for me. It simply wasn't worth the savings to waste so much time driving. The other alternative for some Canadians is to fly Westjet to FLL, then catch a Spirit flight to SJO. Like Capitan1962, I'm tall (6'3") & need more leg room than I'm sure I'd get with them.

I'm not a fan of this nickel and dime operation but it seems that people are complaining about the amount of the fee, not the fee itself. But has anybody actually read the article? The fee is staying at $45 if you pay online or at check-in. It's only $100 when you pay at the gate. Simple solution if you fly this airline... pay at checkin. :?

Market rules. Don't like them, don't fly them.

Even though I have frequent flyer miles with CONtinental, (United), I now chose any other airline if at all possible.

On my up coming flight to PI, I chose Singapore Airlines. $350.00 cheaper, but the layovers add 10 hours each way.

Still, sending a message with my wallet.

Since they are both Star Alliance, could you use your United miles for an award flight on Singapore Airlines?

I flew Spirit a few months ago an pre booked a carry on bag. I guess I did not read the fine print or did not know that I had to pay baggage fee both ways since I had a roundtrip flight. I really got screwed on return trip fee because I had not prepaid. Spirit Sucks.

I can see this from a different perspective. I think they may be trying to discourage people who think they can game their system. On this board, some time ago, someone posted about how they were getting around paying the carry-on bag fee by having a friend hold their bag while they checked in, and telling the agent they did not have a carry-on bag. Every time I have flown on Spirit, the agent at the check-in counter has asked how many bags I have. I carry a small bag, which falls under the dimensions of a personal bag, and it is free. On different occasions, I have seen the agent ask a customer to put his personal bag in the frame to see if it meets the size requirements of a personal bag. If you follow their rules, I think it is very difficult to get to the gate and have to check a bag.

I fly Spirit to Medellin, and haven't had any problem with the flights. I am an average size person, so the seat size is not an issue for me. I don't like their refund policy, but it is what it is. I was scheduled to fly to Medellin in January, but suffered a broken leg in December, and the doctor said I couldn't fly. They would not re-schedule my flight, unless I paid a re-schedule fee of something close to $100, as I remember, and the difference in fares if there was any. I fly JetBlue to San Jose, and they are great.

Exactly, one of the Financial analysts on MSNBC was giving Spirit and Allegiant air both thumbs up for investors. Stating its still 45$ for a carry on , and 100 $ if one trys "to game to system" at the boarding gate.
It still a no go for me, again their business attitude is nickel and dime you to death.
