I'm reading on another board that security at HLH is provided by an unsavory character. Given the deterioration of Hotel M, and also because I don't particularly like the location, I was planning on staying at HLH the next time I'm in San Jose. Now I'm wondering whether that's wise. Any thoughts? Feel free to PM me if this is a taboo subject -- I understand some info was posted on this board, but deleted before I had a chance to read it.

What's going on with the security at HLH?

There are no security issues here at HLH, we have 24 hour armed security. The person who manages my security is having an issue with a local guy who is posting about it. We did have a robbery over a year ago that prompted the armed guards. Unfortunately most of the hotels in the area have had the same issue. I am sure the hundreds of CRT clients who have stayedwith us can give their opinion.

From what I read, security threatened a customer with a gun. Scary news if its true.

There is no security issue for hotel guests. I stayed there over Superbowl weekend. It's one guy with personal issues against the head of security at HLH. It's nothing that should concern anybody staying at the hotel.

I am just posting a one line synopsis of what I read in the above thread (which is in the VIP section so some may not be able to see it).

I always feel very safe at HLH.

The only problem that I've had with my valuables is that all of my money is gone when I check-out.

The girls who work there have all of it.

I have no first-hand knowledge about the so-called "disagreement" referenced above, but FWIW the HLH head of security -- Kelvin P. from Limón (not Calvin, Kevin, Colvin... it's K-E-L-V-I-N) -- is one of the coolest dudes I've met in SJO.

I've known Kelvin (and his brother) for years, and have utilized his security and transportation services quite often. He's always taken care of me and my guests, and always at reasonable rates.

If you want someone who speaks perfect English to drive you around SJO at night, visit clubs and guard your back, you can do no better than hire Kelvin and his executive van. He knows EVERY bouncer at every bar/club/hotspot, knows where every club is (except La Azotea when it was still in La Urruca - I had to give him directions :)), and is an extremely pleasant, honest, and LARGE gentlemen. By the way, did I mention Kelvin is HUGE? :D

Kelvin working security at HLH is one of the canniest moves Boyd and his fellow owners have made, out of many such moves since they took over. Congrats Bktuna!

P.S. By the way, I don't smoke cigars or cigarettes :D

For it to be personal, I would have to have had any prior dealings with Calvin. The only reason I even know Calvin is that he thought he could intimidate me for a few bucks. There was never any transaction between us that would be subject to dispute. If you've met him 3 times, you've met him more than I have. He tried to shake me down for cash last month with the suggestion that if I didn't pay him, he "would come looking for me". I brought it to Boyd's attention, and thought the matter was closed. Only to have him badgering me on the street last night. He either resents Boyd telling him to stop bugging me, or he's still holding out hope of getting a few bucks.

Calvin is a wanna' be gangster that thought I would be, A. Be afraid of him, and B. Give him money behind that fear. Both are inaccurate. Yeah, In a fistfight, I would place him as a favorite. But you'd be mistaken to think that has any bearing on my decision making process. If I have to fight him, I have to fight him. If I lose, then I lose...

I take exception with Boyd because he works for Boyd. I only know Calvin because I was a patron at HLH. Fact is, the only interaction I've ever had with Calvin is the attempted extortion. And when I afforded Boyd the chance to get his house in order, he was evidently incapable of doing so. Evidenced by the altercation on the street last night.

Seems like KELVIN is in the clear... the issue seems to be with someone named Calvin. ;)
