Took a non-hotel cab from DR to SL last week around midnight. Arriving in front of SL, Maria was at 1200. As he was stopping and I was digging, he pressed a button and it went to over 4,250 in a heart beat. "Magico Maria" I said. Gave him 1200 exactamento and he yelped a little but that was that. Cute trick, don't know how they can program Maria's like that but they can.
If you know the ususal amount of the cab fare for your trip, better to offer them that up front with no Maria rather than risk an altercation.
Good for you, but his meter was phucked up - unless he went from the DelRey to the Sportmans via Jaco (kidding to make the point

) that fare should not have been more the 600 - 700 colonies - by the meter. So your 1200 was more than fair.
Seems like we get less and less bad stories about cabs, and that's a good thing - 99.9% of the issues would be avoided by:
Having an idea of what the fare should be (not always easy, especially if you are new, but it makes sense if you are staying at Sportsmans and going to the HDR frequently to ask someone what you should expect to pay - 1200 is too much but not enough to get twisted over - 4k c is $8 - waaaaay too much for something that should be < $1.50)
Avoiding the cabs in front of the DelRey and frankly, w/out negociation, the Sportsmans as well
Asking "Ponga la Maria" (use the meter) every time you take a cab
Cabs are cheap in CR (especially compared to the USA) b/c they are considered part of public transportation - but that does not mean you should over pay
I don't know about you, but I'm damned if
I'm going to be the subject of some cabbie talking with his friends about how he phucked over some stupid gringo
