So I booked a room in the first week of the new year at Sportsmen's Lodge. I wanted to start the year out right. Then I checked round trip airfare, Kansas City to San Jose, routed through Houston. Continental/United economy airfare is $1009.00. Reward fare on the trip out takes 35,000 miles and for the trip back the only reward fares available are for 22 hour flights routed all over the place.

Does anyone think the January fare will come down or will it likely only go up?

Lost,
I used miles last month on AA, fare would have been 1029.00. Checked yesterday for fares in Jan, they were 868.00. IMHO wait 2 more weeks and see what happens, or try different days in Jan.

Lots of us are in the same boat... the ride to SJO has gone up

But for you ... if you just have fun with 10 chicas a day insted of 12 or 13 :D

That should offset the plane fare

Have you looked at Tico Travel

Or you could sell your golf clubs......

Bought a ticket about a month ago for travel in late January from Boston...$520-ish. Figured it wasn't gonna get any cheaper except maybe for an unforeseeable sale. Fares have actually gone down by about $40-ish, but only if I want to travel at inconvenient times, or risk being on the last flight of the day.

Right now I'm seeing fares from MCI for $670 on CO/UA via IAH on beta.itasoftware.com for late January, for pretty much any travel dates.

Thanks friends for your comments. In two weeks I am going to book it, whether the fare is up or down. Life is too short to save my money for when I turn 75.

Pedro needs to get his exercise or he gets lazy and lethargic.

There you go. Another convert to my philosophy of life. As we used to say, use it or lose it!

Yeah, that. In 20 years, what are you going to remember--having paid $200 too much for airfare, or all the cute chicas you played with on your trip?

Who would have thought that leaving on New Year's Day could save me over $400 on airfare. Let's see, 2 more days in San Jose, 2 more days hotel and food, 10 more chicas if I pace myself..........hmmmmmm. But then again..........................

Two days of extra fun and memories..........priceless.

Thanks Skyxchef and everyone else for your comments.

brotherhood in action. well done.
that is the way to go when checking for fares. alternate dates in the range of time and be a little flexible. then check everyday. maybe two or three times a day if you are near a computer.
also low fare alerts help.

Yup, if you can do it, leaving on major holidays can save you lots of money on fares. I've done the same thing with trips (not just CR) on Thanksgiving day and Christmas day. The masses fly on the day before, flying on the holiday itself is usually cheaper (and calmer).
