But for travelers there will be little if no impact. It will be business as usual.

Business as usual: delayed flights, dirty-crowded airplanes, rude counter personnel, damaged or lost bags and rude flight attendants.

I wonder why they are having problems?

Awhile ago American announced they had made a huge order for new planes split between Boeing and Airbus. All of the MD80 feel would be retired. Yesterday I got this email from AA which announces the first deliveries.

Quote:

We are excited to introduce the newest member of our fleet, the Boeing 777-300ER. This state-of-the-art aircraft will join our fleet starting in 2012 and offer an upgraded travel experience in every cabin, including a new Economy Class premium seat product.

Designed to modernize and enhance the total onboard experience, the Boeing 777-300ER will come equipped with special features for every customer:

• International Wi-Fi capability
• In-seat entertainment with up to 120 movies, over 150 TV programs and 350 audio selections
• Universal AC power outlets available at every seat
• Specially designed Economy Class seating offering a higher recline pivot and an articulating
seat bottom that provides more knee room and more comfort

Customers traveling in one of our premium cabins will enjoy additional enhancements:

• New fully lie flat First and Business Class seating with aisle access from every seat
• A walk-up bar stocked with snacks and refreshments — a first for any U.S. airline
• Bose® QuietComfort® 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headset

Universal AC power outlets would be nice. Right now, you need a cigarette lighter (DC) power adapter on their 757's. I don't think they even make those anymore. Tells you how old that fleet is.

Unfortunately, the 777-300ER is probably not going to be used on any North/Central America routes. It's an extended range model, so maybe Brazil and points south or Europe/Asia routes.

Very true but they are also getting new planes that will be use on less long range routes.

Quote:
More On Our Fleet Renewal Efforts

The new aircraft will also allow American to offer additional network flexibility in the near future and is in addition to American's other fleet orders and renewal efforts currently underway including:

10 Boeing 777-300ER widebody aircraft to be delivered in 2012 through 2013
Six 777-200 widebody aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2014 through 2016
42 state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliners expected to be delivered starting late 2014

Additionally when the Airbus deliveries start they will go on the shorter routes. All of this is of course long over due as their MD80 and 757 fleets are some of the oldest aircraft still in use by a major carrier.

Comforting feeling to know this while stepping aboard.

Those 777s and 787s are obviously for Europe and Asia flights. Nothing like that is needed for DFW/MIA to SJO, AA will probably keep flying those 757s and A300s for the next few years at least. :D

Well that's probably true, however the a300's have already been retired

If by "retired" you mean sold to regional airlines in Africa. God help those people.

Just flew DFW-SJO on an old 757. Crampted seats, old moniters kind of like old TV's with egg shaped screen. I had a panic attack on the way down to SJO and male steward was up set with me. Finally a female stewdess talk to me for 15 minutes and calmed me down. She really helped me. Never again will I get on a plane with valium or xanax.
