I believe it's $28 at Sportsmens. I'd suggest you get it before heading to the airport. It's usually short, but I have seen the exit tax line at the airport go around the corner when I came in Aug 21st. The wait would have been 20-30 minutes. |

Do you have to stay at the SL to pay the fee? |

Still, it just makes sense to do it at the airport and change money at the bank next to it at the same time |

If it's worth your time, on arrival, go upstairs and change money at bank rates, and buy your departure tax.If you're not so inclined to go upstairs on arrival, it's a good idea to buy the departure tax at SL. No waiting, and it's one less thing to worry about at the airport. SR Don't know why this is such a difficult concept for some to grasp ![]() |

I have never gone upstairs to exchange money or bought my departure tax ahead of time... SL affords me to be as lazy as possible to do both right on campus. I guess it depends how much you are exchanging but for me its only about a hundo every 2 days or so.. Cujo |

This is probably best addressed in another post but--What's the purpose of changing money when most venues and probably the Chicas will accept USD at a reasonable rate? I can see exchanging $100 or so for incidental expenses but otherwise--why? Especially if you know what the real rate should be? Bit long in the tooth for this newbie question, aren't I? |

I agree, like I said I exchange a hundo every 2 days or so for an occasional taxi or if I go out and eat somewhere etc.. I'm with you, I don't get it; but then again, my give a shit factor is pretty low on this too.. Cujo |

Cujo You guy know where to go to do both; many, especially new guys - even those w/ a few trips often don't. I just like the idea of having the stamp bought (one time the line was really long at the airport - this was before you could buy the exit visa in SJ. Re changing money, I normally pay for many things in dollars, and exchange $200 - 300 at the airport bank. I have found that sometimes I'm limited in what I can exchange at a hotel, and I hate the idea of waiting on line at a bank in SJ and carring money back to the room. Different strokes; no real "right or wrong" answer, especially for those who know CR - but since the question comes up quite a bit, I just think - especially for those new to CR - its easier just to have it done and over with ![]() |

Is there an exit fee if you travel to Granada Nicaragua from San Jose by Tica bus and plan on returning in less than a week? |

59Vette wrote: Is there an exit fee if you travel to Granada Nicaragua from San Jose by Tica bus and plan on returning in less than a week? No, the fee does not apply except for departures by air. I have never left from Liberia but I would assume the fee applies there as well as at SJO. There are various border crossing fees going to Nicaragua or Panama by bus but they are less then the $26.00 exit fee. |

The fee applies for air departures only because a good chunk of the fee goes to airport improvement, maintenance, and transportation fund. The rest goes into the deep pockets of crooked politicians. |
