Slight topic shift, but some of the stuff I've read here leads me to believe that the beach at Jaco is not safe to swim at because of high bacteria count.
I'm an East Coast boy and have never seen, much less swum in, the Pacific. Wanted to have a go at that this trip--maybe take a day trip by bus to Jaco and take a dip in the Pacific Ocean, just so I can cross that off my personal bucket list. (I'm unlikely to travel to SoCal as there's not that much there that's of interest to me.)
I really couldn't care that much about Beatle Bar, there are plenty of chicas at the DR, SL, etc., for me when I get back from my day trip.
However, as much as I'd like to take a swim, spending the rest of my trip suffering from giardiasis is not my idea of fun.
Is the beach at Jaco safe for swimming? If not , is there a beach that's a reasonable day trip from SJO that's good for actual swimming, and doesn't require a car to get to? Also, what do you do with your wallet, etc., while you go swimming, if you don't have a car to lock it in, and you don't have a hotel room at the beach either?
Jaco has a crappy beach. Travel a little farther south to Quepos/ Manuel Antonio. I believe there still is a daytour leaving San Jose for Manuel Antonio.
