Or, for about $3-4 each, you can take a Tranportes Morales bus from the CocaCola Bus Terminal, located at Calle 16, between Avenue 1 and Avenue 3. Direct service buses leave at 6 a.m., 9 a.m., noon, and 2:30 p.m. You can buy tickets ahead and will have a reserved seat.

I would say $120 one-way for a taxi.

I was there in July and was quoted $150 to $200 by several taxi/minibus drivers. I actually paid $100.00 plus a $10.00 tip (at the insistance of my novia) to the amigo of one of my novia's girlfriends (and I do mean GIRLFRIEND) who does a private pirate taxi thing. Cramped car, I paid the tolls, but not too bad overall. This was to Manuel Antonio which is farther than Jaco or Quepos. We took the green minivan shuttle back for $40.00 each which was just as comfortable. The plus of the first trip was the reason I met the driver, fantastic 3 way with the GF. The minus of the second trip was a blabbermouth gringa who thought she could speak Spanish and jabbered with the driver the whole trip plus induced a 45 minute stop at the Corn restaurant as we approached San Jose. Difference, $30.00 for two people. I will say the trip is much more pleasant since the toll road is open, I remember the old days of 6 hours in shitty traffic behind 20 mile an hour trucks spewing diesel fumes in your face. Your most economical option is if you have a group and can hire a minvan guy for a reasonable price.

I do a full day tour to Manuel Antonio for up to 6 people from San Jose for $250 or $225 if you are a CRT member. That includes transport there and back to San Jose, my services as your guide/translator/security and up to 12 hours of total time (and I'm not a clock watcher ).

If you go one day and come back the next, I can do just the round trip for $300($270). If you go one day and come back two or more days later, it would be $350 round trip. One way is $200($180).

I have a very spacious Toyota Landcruiser with leather interior, tinted windows, air conditioning etc.. Check out http://www.puravidatransport.com for more info or PM me here...

I would NOT recommend taking a 'pirate taxi' your 'favorite' recommends EVER... I've heard of at least two guys that did that and next thing they knew, they were alone on the side of the highway with no bags, no money, no wallet, no passport, no phone and a ruined vacation. Always use a 'known' person! Bus service is useable but protect your valuables whether it be on the public bus or something like Interbus.

FYI my "favorita" and I have been together for 8 years. I would not trust someone I didn't know well.

I've used PuraVidaTransport several times and always been happy. And ditto what he says about pirate taxis or dudes offering to do it for you for a great price. The true price will be all the shit they steal from you.

Thank you for all the replies. As there will only be two of us I think we are going to try taking the bus. It's 3950 colones each each way.

That's what I would do. I recently, after being here 5.5 years, learned to take the train from Sabana Sur to San Jose. Zero traffic so faster than a taxi and 420 colon instead of 2600 to 6000 if Friday traffic.
