United Continental is charging anywhere from $700-$770 for a RT trip to CR. The sad thing is that if you fly anywhere and just go through IAH its less. From MIA through IAH to SJO is $330. WTF? |

Have you looked at partner airline flights on Copa from IAH to PTY, then to SJO? I know it is a bit of backtracking...but sometimes they are cheaper than direct flights. Good luck..I'm in a similar boat. I had to delay a RT from PHX to SJO last May...now, even with my credit, my new ticket would be double what I paid in April. CH |

My family just bought tickets yesterday and paid around $600 for San Francisco to Houston to San Jose. Also got Dallas to Houston to San Jose for a bit over $400. Drive to Dallas is only an hour shorter than to Houston but the difference in price as you alluded to was their deciding factor... |

This topic always comes up, the short answer is that this is normal practice among the airlines. I forget the full explanation, but if an airline is the only one flying direct to an international destination from one of its hubs, people connecting through that hub pay less (usually much less) than those flying direct from the hub. So you guys who live in places like Dallas, Houston and Atlanta, you just have to bend over and take it. ![]() |

If you read these post at all, you know I am a big time CONtinental basher. It is greed and they are in cahoots with Taca and Copa. I fly to Thailand or Philippines for 1100 USD. Their explanation is that it is a gateway hub to South America, and they make way for North American travelers converging at IAH to go south. Bullshit. People pay it, so they charge it. Both of my brothers work at IAH. I have no choice,..so I have stopped going. |

I may just look at flying through another gateway on my next roundtrip. If I can shave a few hundred bucks off, and I can deplane and transfer my luggage myself, I might go through Miami from Houston and not care what damn airline it is. The kicker though is my luggage. No way I 'm trusting the airlines to move my luggage around on a connecting flight. Every damage, delayed and lost bag I've ever had was on a connecting flight. |

There are three options to book a ticket, One-Way, Round-Trip, and Multi-City. The person living in the hub city can book their return leg of their ticket to anywhere that has the cheapest ticket price and simply exit the plane in the hub city, where they live, not taking the final leg. This will only work with carry on baggage. I've done this about 10 times returning to ATL from SJO. |
