The CR tourism board keeps saying that tourism is rebounding, but hotel owners I talk with, and resort rental property owners too, tell me that business is way off and has been for more than a year.
I've got a 16-day trip in June. Found a studio apartment downtown, just a block and a half from Plaza Cultura, with a jacuzzi, flatscreen TVs, nice little kitchenette, etc., for $40 a night. In better times the asking price was $100 por noche.
And I found a condo in Jaco, about 300 yards from the Beatle Bar, for $50 a night, including use of the complex's swimming pool and hot tub and other amenities.
The owner there said he used to get double that price also, but that he gets far fewer calls in response to his ads these days.
The only drawback to renting apartments instead of staying at hotels is that some chicas are reluctant to go to a private residence with a new customer, for fear of their safety.
I've talked to girls in the DelRey that say one of their cardinal rules is never to go to a private house or apartment unless they know a guy really well.
Luckiily I know enough girls who have known me for a while, or will vouch for me with a new girl, and tell 'em it's safe to go with me.
I love staying at the SL, where all you have to do is step out of your room and into the bar to shop for company. But it's kind of nice doing the apartment thing, too. And some of the girls enjoy getting away from the same-ol' same-ol at the hotels.
