If you want a window, get one of the rooms in the newer section (rooms 20-28 I think), the old section rooms are rustic. You can even smell the age of the wood.

I am considering staying at Castillo for about 12 days. I want suggestions on rooms that are straight. I have heard that some are great with a nice tropical feel, and others are garbage. I would prefer a room with windows and a balcony (if available). Can any of you guys give me suggestions? best rooms, rooms to avoid? |

I like Castillo it's not noisy and good location, I've stayed there 3 times and have always enjoyed the stay. As for the rooms. The back rooms I found are best and you can get one with a CRT VIP and Cash discount for under 60 a night. Balcony? the upper level has a walkway. The hotel has a nice garden area and bar area and also a very nice sitting area where I love to set and read books and check out the activity. IMHO if you are looking for a spot thats close to the action but far enough away that you can relax Castillo is the place. |

Nice choice! The last room on the upper balcony was my favorite. It has a great window view and a nice breeze, I think it's #28. The bar can get a "little" loud but shuts down early. What I loved the most was the simple rooms, hospitality of the staff, room service from the restaurant next door and the vibe/ feel of the 'castle'. HLH and NF are a short walk down the street and the sportsmen's is a short walk up the street. Take a walk through the park and your at the Del Rey and KL. From the sound of it your probably going to be most happy with the rooms at the back of the hotel next to the bar. |

thanks guys I am familiar with the location, but never stopped in to check it out on my last trip. so do none of the rooms have a balcony, just the exterior walkway? perro what type of room is #28? I sent darren an email asking what he had available and what i was most interested in. |

I usually stay in the old mansion section. My favorite rooms are 6, 7, 9 & the two rooms on the third floor. Room #9 is the suite (separate living room & bedroom with kitchenette). My least favorite rooms are on the first floor #1 - #4, |

the 2 rooms on the 3rd floor are better than most rooms in san jose ...its old school and cool...I have had some great sessions in both ....nothing beats have a hot tica in that room while the rain hits that tin roof .....if you can get one of the 2 ...do it |

I stayed in #5 on the second floor in the old building and this room is not good. I believe it is the worst room in the hotel. It is large with no A/C , 2 beds with one that the mattress is completly blown out. the safe is in a corner on the floor and you have to get down on all fours to access. checked out the next day and the lady said it was only room left (July4 weekend) television recption was poor |

I love the Castillo, and contrary to popular belief, my favorite room is #4. Its in the old section on the first floor, I guess most dont like it because its a tad noiser than the rest, but I am an early riser and will awake at the smell of fresh brewed coffee no matter how late the night was. Room 28 the last room on the top of the new section would be my second choice just for the view. You will not find a friendlier staff anywhere in CR |

14-18 all have a kitchenette. This means that you should have a coffee maker, fridge, toaster oven and microwave. With a little imagination that can produce quite a few things. Fingerling potatoes bake well in the toaster oven. You can always get a cooked chicken and such. I've probably spent over half a year in those rooms over the last decade. |

There is someone who stays in #21 probably 6-8 months a year and that is his personal fridge. If you catch the room while he is back home you get the use of it. The only rooms with hotel fridges are 14-18 and #9 the suite. |

The back rooms are nice and are opposite the back bars of the defunct Las Palmas Restaurant. I've never stayed but do business with both Darren and the new owner of the restaurant: U K, who is in the process of opening the restaurant again. Some of my clients didn't like the noise from the back bar, so moved to the main building. However, SL has similar situation and closes bar at midnight. Sacrifices have to be made to be close to the action. |
