I have never been to CR, but I would love to go. As of now I am planning a 6 or 7 day trip in Aug. I have read so much stuff in the past few weeks I can’t remember what I read where. Even after reading and watching tons of video I still have 1000 questions. 1. I don’t want to spend a lot on a hotel, but there are things I would like: A mini fridge, safe place to keep my things (wallet, money, laptop, passport, etc.), a private bath and a room that allows smoking. Does the freebird still not allow smoking in their Deluxe suites? Btw I am not to keen on hearing what my neighbors in the hotel are doing or them hearing me through the walls ![]() 2. Hotel Tiquicia. I have heard reviews on other sites, but not on this site. I have contacted them and he quoted me a price of $49.50 a night, which is above there advertised price of $40 and $45 a night for all the stuff I wanted. I thought price was suppose to go down during the green season ![]() Any help would be appreciated. 2 down only 998 more to go. |

The Amistad has all you want, and if you become a VIP member you'll get the weekly discount of 25% off the room rate for that 6+ day trip. A queen bed room there is normally $69.00, do the math. ![]() |

All rooms have those amenities. In addition, all rooms now have flat screen TV's, I do believe. Lowest price on the website is $59 per night. A 10% CRT discount is applicable, and sometimes other specials are available (just call or email). SR +1 not to mention its by far the best place to get a first trip started... ![]() ![]() Cujo |

Just MHO, but avoid the real budget places like Hotel Nuevo Johnson, as well as the large American chain hotels - in fact, stick to the sponsors on this site - while I think some of the praise for Sportsmans can be a tad over the top sometimes - especially for the food ![]() PS Freebird is OK, but limits smoking to SOME of their rooms, and has a no cigar policy - deal breaker for me - YMMV. |

My pleasure - I've been there and done that too (to use a very trite saying ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sounds like you have a real good plan - get out and see some of the city when you are there - you may meet up w/ guys who can walk around and give you a tour; talk to guys at meals, the bar at Sportsmans - you will separate the knowledgeable from the Drugstore Cowboys quickly - If not, consider "Pops Guide Service" - he's one of us and you can get his web site and contact info by doing a search - well worth whatever he is charging ($50??). |

Freebird is OK, but limits smoking to SOME of their rooms, and has a no cigar policy - deal breaker for me - And very, very loud traffic and city noise and you will hear every thrust and every groan from the guy in the next room. |

Welcome Aboard Wolverine: You’re well advised to stay at the SL for your premier voyage to CR. As others have said, it’s a great place to get your sea legs.  I’ll be in port during your visit (3/30 thru 6/6). Staying at the Freebird…with all the “noiseâ€.  I have stayed other places in San Jose (HLH, SL and Amistad…all were good), but Freebird is my favorite. Cigar restrictions don’t bother me a bit…Not exactly me leaf of choice. Noise…I disagree that you can hear traffic noise at night from Avenida Segundo. (That street gets pretty deserted after 10pm)  Yes…you can hear loud noises from the adjoining room…not an issue for me. I tend to be a late night person, and I like the fact that I don’t have to tip-toe around my suite during a late night party.  If the noise gets too loud, my neighbors know that all they have to do is tell me to quiet down…done. But usually, the neighbors are partying with me. (Got in a bit of trouble one time at the Amistad with the late-night antics.)  While you’re in town, if you’re curious what the ‘bird is like, you’re welcome to join us for a cold one and check out the lay of the land.  A good friend of mine is in the adjoining suite. (He’s probably a better person than I am to speak to the “noise from the adjoining room†issue.)  Enjoy your maiden voyage.  Nastarovia! -sport      |
