Post subject:  How far is Jaco from SJO?

Hey guys. I am wondering how far Jaco is from Sportsmens Lodge.
I would be going March 30-April 5th and was thinking maybe taking some time off from SJO and go to the beach.
What are my transportation options? Where's a good place to stay that is very clean, safe and allows girls to come into the rooms.
What regular (non-sexual) activities can I do at Jaco and do I need to make reservations?

Thanks in advance.

Jaco is about 1.5 hours from SJO. With the new highway, it can be quicker , especially during off-peak hours. During the day, it's still about 1.5-2 hours.

A taxi will run $100 or a little more each way. If splitting it with a buddy or two, it's doable. If going solo, look at the next option.

If you are going alone, you should take Interbus. It's $28.50/person each way. They pick you up at your hotel and drop you off at the hotel of your choosing in Jaco, door to door service. Book them 3 days in advance here.

I don't know about Jaco hotels. Hot-co sucks IMO.

Other activities: you can take a canopy tour (zip lines)--most fun activity, ATV riding, fishing off-shore, beach-kind of nasty though  , horseback, etc

You'll find everything from mud-ducks to smokin' hotties, and everything in between. Have fun!

There were a pool full of hotties at the Copacabana the Sunday of the superbowl. Don't know if this was an isolated incident. Didn't get a chance to get by there this weekend. Have heard good reports from the BB, but haven't been there myself recently. Another good tour in the area is the Tortuga Island boat trip. Streets are quiet today, but I'm gonna wander down to the Cocal later and see if there is anything going on around the pool.

Website for the Copa is http://www.copacabanahotel.com/. There are a couple of companies that do the Tortuga Island trip. I used http://www.bayislandcruises.com for some clients recently and they were very happy.

It's a touristy community, an ok beach, decent restaurants (Claritas, Tsunami Sushi, Jaco Taco) and ATVing is good. Having a car is helpful, you can travel around to Playa Herradura ?, stop on the bridge across the Rio Tarcoles and view the crocs, stop along the way. Take the old highway which winds, but has very little traffic. Oh on busy weekends the toll road changes to one way towards Jaco, the other way on Sunday.

Looks like bayislandcruises.com is not working.
How much is the copa hotel per night? their website is strange, I don't see the price.
Looking to stay only 1 night. Is Tortuga far from Jaco?

Would it be possible to do a Jaco or Tortuga in one day and come back to Sportsmen Lodge?

Just clicked on the link and it worked. Might have been a glitch with the internet when you tried. As for how far, time to travel just got longer. They are closing a piece of the new highway for at least three weeks.

Here are the dates that they expect a portion of the road to be closed and the dates that other construction work will be in progress but the road will be open.

Quote:
San José - Caldera To Be Closed Starting Sunday Night

Starting at 11pm Sunday the section between Atenas and Orotina of the San José - Caldera will be closed. The closure will be for at least three weeks, says Autopistas del Sol, the operator of the toll road.

"We will be closing this section starting on Sunday to remove the Bailey bridges at kilometre 47, to repair the section of road that caved in", explained Christian Sandoval, general manager of Autopistas.

The complete closure of the Atenas - Orotina section will be until March 6.

The work on the road is expected to be totally completed by April 10 and the rest of the repair work on the route by April 30, promises Autopistas.

If you will recall, the San José - Caldera was closed for a month last (see story) year when a section of the road at kilometre 47 was washed away by a landslide. The closure was necessary to install the Bailey's that were to be a temporary measure for a few weeks, that passed to months.

Autopistas has also been under the gun of the ministro de Obras Públicas, Francisco Jiménez and Costa Rica's vice-president, Luis Liberman, to repair the road, bringing it to standards called for in the concession contract.
