I'm going to be in San Jose next week and booked a 2 BR suite at the HLH with my buddy for 2 nights. It's been a few years since I've been there, and last time it was the Zona Blue.
Can't wait to get there but I had a few concerns: Has there been any sign of trouble (i.e. local police sniffing around/media, etc.) since the new owners took over?? The idea of being raided while I'm enjoying a session in my suite does not sound the least bit appealing!!
I guess I'm just looking for a few of you guys in "the know" to ease my mind a bit.

Another question: We're going to the Jaco area next Monday/Tuesday and we figured we'd just book a room when we got there. I was thinking Hotel Poseidon, with the CRT VIP discount and no chica fee and all. Are there any vacancy problems this time of year, or should I book now just to make sure? Is the Beetle Bar what it used to be? My friend was there 1 or 2 years ago and said it had been shut down?? If so is there another comparable bar?

Thanks,
Pura Vida!

If you are in your hotel room, the police wouldn't bother you. They would only go to the MP part and check everybody out.

I would make advance reservations. Feb is high season. I have had trouble getting last minute accomadations in Jaco in Feb.

Beetle Bar is still open. However they are really pissing off a lot folks. They have raised the cover charge and drink prices. Still the epicenter of Jaco night Mongering. They are now pushing the girls to get guys to buy drinks. They don't even kick $$$ back to the girls just threaten them that if I guy is talking to them and not buying drinks they won't be let back in.

To me Beetle Bar is now a 1 drink stop. Go in nurse a beer and find a girl and leave ASAP. Not really interesting in hanging out there like we used to. Pay in colones cuz they will phuck you on using dollars there. Mixed drinks way overpriced!

I've heard Monkey Bar is back up and running and the Loft are some possibilities. Pancho Villas late at night sometimes. But Beetle is still ground zero in Jaco.

I sure do miss the original Beetle Bar owner.

As of yesterday at 4pm, $46 for the hour with CRT card in hand, $55 without. Not sure the half hour rate.

Thanks, Hank. I can't seem to find a CRT half hour rate. Maybe there's isn't a special rate for half hour. Is there a regular rate?

About HLH--That area is a tranny cruising area and they can be somewhat aggressive (I gotta believe they are as hungry as the Chicas these days). Point of this? Wait til the cab that's called pulls right to the door when going out, and cab it even to the new Dunn Inn lounge. Call me chickenshit if you like but better safe than sorry.

If you are staying at a room at the HLH, don't have the cab take you there from the airport, the cabbies get a kickback which is passed on to you through your bill. Correct me if I am wrong on this, this policy may have changed with the new owners. You might want to have them take you to Bar Poas or the Hotel Santo Tomas and then walk back across the street. If this is at night, watch out for the aforementioned trannies at "Tranny Corner."

Still wondering if there's a CRT rate for a half hour at HLH. Surely, one of you vets knows. ;)

HLH does not offer a 1/2 hour rate that I'm aware of.

I thought it was $35, but no CRT discount. Am I wrong?

There IS a half-hour rate at LH. Merely pay the hour rate and leave after 1/2 hour.

No half hour rate. If you think $46 or $55 is too expensive, there are other less-expensive alternatives not too far away from HLH.

There USED to be a half-hour rate at HLH, it was $30 or $33 for (CRT discount), I've done it a few times. Guess they got rid of it.
