"I just left a meeting with Ana Orosco, Mayor of Quepos and Dr. Alejandra Quesada of the Health Department concerning the imminent danger of a mountain collapse onto the main road leading from Quepos to Manuel Antonio. The subject area stretches from the new Tutu Bar to Mimo’s Hotel and everything on both sides of the road.

Owners are advised to close their businesses and vacate their premises until a geologist gives a report of what needs to be done to resolve this danger. The populated areas below this mountain are in grave danger of massive land slides.

Please prepare for the eventuality of Manuel Antonio being inaccessible until solutions can be found to do the necessary repairs to the Main Road and be ready to contribute to the repair of the “Old Manuel Antonio Access Road” in a major way.

Without say, the imminent danger on the eve of our Highs Season threatens the entire area of Manuel Antonio if swift action is not undertaken. We need your full cooperation as we stay focused on what to do next.

Wow, what a dire report on a major tourist area! Sure hope the worst predicted doesn't come to pass.

This is the Warden message sent out last evening by the U.S. Embassy.

Quote:
U.S. Embassy Warden Message (Weather related)

Locke, Donald E
<LockeDE@state.gov> Attachment Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 8:00 PM
To: "ACS, SanJose" <ACSSanJose@state.gov>

Dear American Citizens:

This warden message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens residing and
traveling in Costa Rica that heavy rainfall over the last several days
has caused flooding and landslides throughout the country, resulting in
damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure. This includes
closure of the road to the popular tourist destination of Manuel
Antonio/Quepos.

While there have been a number of confirmed casualties, the Embassy has
not received any reports of any American deaths or missing Americans.
U.S. citizens in Costa Rica or travelers with plans to visit in the
country over the next few days should closely monitor local and
international media reports. Visitors should review and follow their
hotel evacuation plans, and U.S. citizens should make preparations in
the event that communications, power, and transportation systems are
affected.

The Embassy will continue to monitor the situation and will issue
updated messages. U.S. citizens should carry their travel documents at
all time (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture ID's, etc.) or
secure them in safe, waterproof locations. The Embassy strongly
encourages that U.S. citizens contact friends and family in the United
States with updates about their whereabouts.

I am not an Engineer
however I am a qualified heavy equipment operator based in the wet coast of BC Canada

when I see these posts I am just itching to be there and try to help.

often simple preventive measures can keep the roads and hillsides together.

Spoke with Budget rent a car there today, the main road to the beach from downtown is passable, one side fixed by El Mirador so only one direction at a time there which I think is on the slope so don't rent any standard shifts.

If you can't start driving up a slope with a standard shift car then you should not be driving it anyway.

Just got back, the slope on the hill in Quepos to M.A. is almost totally repaired, they let one side pass and then the other. Who is this dope newbie that offered his advice about driving with a stick shift which I learned 45 years ago? If he knew the slope on that curve with the stop and goes of cars or trucks or buses in front of you, he'd keep his advice to himself and spend 5 dollars a day more on an automatic.

While generally agreeing with the automatic vs. stick-shift advice given here (though I haven't driven a slushbox in 25 years), most modern stick-shifts have a hill-holder option that makes these situations much easier.

I'll settle for my Audi A5 with Tiptronic Transmissio... :D :D

Speaking if which---On my recent trip a couple weeks ago to CR I stopped by Multiplaza to browse around and saw that they actually have an Audi store inside the mall. As I recall, they had an A5 and a TT on the floor. Can't imagine driving one of those around the streets of San Jose.
