There's what, a bazillion travelers apps for smartphones/iPads? The NYTimes has gathered and reviewed some of the better ones (from free to $4.99):

Jibbigo is a pretty kewl app. It translates spanish to english and vise versa. You can either speak into the microphone (slowly and clearly) and it will show you what you said in writing then speak it in spanish (or english depends which way your going). Its a bit slow and if you dont speak very clearly it will missinterpret what you said, at that point you can type what you actually wanted to say or resay it and have it try again. Its for sure not perfect but I found the girls that I spent time with really liked playing with it and trying to get other things across when there is a big language barrier. Im still trying to learn spanish through Pimsluer course and will rely on this till im more fluent.
