I have seen a few posts requesting recommendations on where to stay in San Jose.

I’ve stayed at the Freebird on a few occasions, and I find it to be a good combination of comfort, safety and convenience.

The Freebird has seven rooms…2 suites and 5 queen-size rooms. The suites have their own large bathroom and a small kitchenette with sink, microwave, refrigerator and dishes. The suites also have two flat screen TVs with a large selection of channels, and a sitting area with couch, chair and barstools.

The other five rooms have queen-size beds, each with a flat screen TV, refrigerator and table/chairs. These rooms share two large bathrooms on the ground floor.

The CRT price for the suite is $69/nt. And the Queen-size room is $34/nt.

The guys that take advantage of the Queen-size rooms tend to be on tight budgets, traveling as a group of friends, or using the ‘Bird as a home base for traveling around Costa Rica. (I was in town a few months ago, and a group of five friends rented out the back…amazing parties…girls coming and going at all hours…good fun.)

The Freebird also has laundry facilities that come in handy…so I can pack less clothes for the trip.

The two maids working there are very cool…and honest…especially so, given some of the parties that they’ve had to clean up.  (I once spilled some smoking materials during a late night fiesta…only to find  two stray buds neatly placed on the counter the next day after my room was cleaned…like I said…Very cool.)

Never had a problem asking for a couple of fresh towels (It’s kind of a bust when a chica sees four used towels in the bathroom, and it’s only 2pm.)…And, total respect for the “Do Not Disturb” sign. (Very important when you’ve got company staying overnight.)

You can also use the Magicjack connection they have to make calls to the US…local calls can be made from the room phone…and they have a good wifi connection as well.

The Freebird is located on Calle 11, just south of Avenida Segunda. It is 1/5 of a mile to HDR, about 250 meters to MP Idem, and less than 250 meters to the Mas Por Menos market. A walk to HLH takes about 10 minutes.

Since the ‘Bird is on Calle 11, there are a lot of taxis using this street as it is one of the few northbound streets in that area. Easy to get a taxi any time of the night…never had to wait more than a couple of minutes.

When I first started visiting CR, I always traveled solo. Since I started staying at the Freebird, I have met a lot of good guys. A few  have become good friends and traveling coconspirators. Even when I don’t know who is staying at the Freebird, by the time I leave, I’ve made a new friend or two. (Last trip, I met two cousins from Austin Texas…great guys…a blast to party with...They liked the big Dominicans…Oh My!!!)

I personally like staying in either of the two suites…they’re located along the walkway back to the other rooms. With the door open, I get to say hello to all the passers-by as well as check out their companions. Many a passing couple has stopped by to take advantage of my open door policy and come in for a cold drink and a puff before heading off for their own party.

If I’m not sleeping or sexing, I pretty much leave my door open most of the time I’m in the room. I’ve had girls that hang out with me comment on how relaxed and friendly the atmosphere is.

To access the property, you use a number code to get through a security gate. The gate comes in handy, in case you get an unexpected visit from an amiga while you’re entertaining another.

Kind of interesting…When I meet a new girl and she asks me where I’m staying…they rarely know the name Freebird. However, once the taxi rolls up to the front gate, many of the girls will smile and say “Oh…I know this place.” Seems as though the boys that have stayed here in the past were quite active.

I enjoy staying at the Freebird because it feels less like a hotel, and more like an apartment (with maid service).

Hope this information helps.

Felicidades!

What is the noise factor like? It is right next to Av 2 one of the most heavily traveled if not the most heavily traveled street in CR.

I have stayed there two or three times on last moment even day of trips. Really like the place. In a rare plan ahead moment, a rarity for me because I live here full time, I will be staying for four nights of Superbowl weekend! Great location, great appointments, and Dennis is a great host!

Excellent report on a venue that doesn't get much press here. Good job, Brother 67SS.

I`ve spent 10 days there and found it very quiet. It`s a great location and I`m coming back in Feb for 10 days.

As I have reported in my previous trips, IMHO the Freebird is a great place to stay. Dennis is an excellent host and what Sport has said on this thread is spot on. I haven't been back to CR for a couple of years, but plan to next April. For different reasons, it's always a toss up between the Freebird and the SL.

As mentioned...no guest fees.
As for the maids...there are two that work on different days...great people...so its a good idea to leave a propina in the envelope each day.
I leave either 1K or 2K per day (depending on how crazy things got the night before).
About $20 for five days...$10 for each of them...and they certainly earn and deserve every colone.

Prost!

The Freebird or the Sportsman's Lodge are always where I get my friends to stay. I live here but I have found that my friends have a better time staying in town.

I have been staying there for the last four years, and I have stayed at several other hotels in the area before.
The Freebird is favorite hotel of them all.
