A good, solid hotel that doesn't get a lot of press. Close to the action, but quiet itself.
I love the bars (both of them) there, especially on longer trips when I need an occasional break from the party atmosphere of HDR, KL, SL, etc.

That's why when I'm in San Jose, it's my "home away from home." :D

Yes, It has a laid back groove to it and all of the other spots that most of us go to are very nearby. I can say that "back in the day", I used to love the HDR 24/7 but now can only stay for a night like I did this past trip. Not to get me wrong, I love to party all night long sometimes but not as I did before. So the Castillo was just what I needed after that night. I can duck in and out of any of our Brothers favorite places and relax when I want to. DRD

Well said. This was the first hotel in SJ that I ever stayed. I remember the first trip to Costa Rica, was not a CRT member and had never read the board. My intuitive whoring ability led me here by instinct, San Jose I mean. Used TACA airlines because a guy I had met 10 years prior, told me he often met girls on the flights in. Huge mistake. 10 hour flight, 3 stops. Anyway, arrived at the Hotel Castillo at 11:00pm. Checked in, took a quick shower and asked the guy at the lobby desk where I might get a beer, as the bar there was closed. That night I found Sportsmens Lodge. Will never forget that night. You know, strange city, the different smells...and man, was it crowded! I remember thinking I was in heaven,...lol   ....I didn't know anyone....within an hour picked a dark Nica, who I have not seen since, and this girl sucked me with great enthusiasm. First time I had a tongue in my ass  I blew all in her hair, and she had to shower afterward.
Stayed at Castillo 4 more times, and have always enjoyed it. Thought I would try something different and booked this past August at SL. That is nice, with it's own character. Yet, in three more weeks, will be back at "Home away from Home",...Castillo.

"Home away from home" is a great way of putting it. I plan on getting back down to CR as soon as possible and I will stay at the Castillo again.

.In oct. I will be staying in the newer rooms for the first time, 23 on 2nd floor with the view out back. On the 3rd floor,..when you go up the stairs, 11 is on the left and 12 is on the right. 12 is a little larger.

Room 11 has a female spirit, (ghost), I didn't see her but felt it enough that I asked Darren that week about the rooms being haunted, and related to him my deodorant was missing. Lol,..he had a surprised look on his face and said yes,..that is what people say, and sometimes the deodorant is returned.....

Room 12 is a good room also, nothing odd staying here,..good views out the windows. I do wish they would put mini fridges in these rooms though. Slept well in both of these rooms

Room 12 is nice because it is quiet and you get a good downhill view of the Zoo entrance. The big old room on the third floor is kind of neat too. Great view of San Jose from the shower/bathroom window.

Room 11, I almost moved out of room 3 to 11 but was okay in 3. Now, knowing of the "spirit", I wish I had. I felt something there when I checked it out for sure. There are many ghost stories around town that I have heard about. Darren, if you read this you should hype it a bit. Maybe a drink named after her at the bar ect.

Speaking of the bars, who's tending bar now? I usually spend a lot of time in the back bar when I'm in CR.

I NEED to try this hotel out. Lack of press has not led me there, but many I speak with have very little negative to say about the place. Just tried La Amistad for the first time as my usual SL was full. I enjoyed my stay as the place was very laidback. Perhaps I should try another laidback place for my next trip? Castillo sounds like a good fit for me.

Normally even more laid back than La Amistad. Not quite as upscale, but very nice, which means nice clean rooms for cheap.

Their website mentions air conditioning in select rooms. How common of an occurrence is this? While it can get pretty hot in SJO, normally it does not. But I like AC at night because sometimes the car/taxi noise keeps me from getting a good nights sleep.
