I've been lurking on this forum for a while now and I will be coming to CR in January for my 4th trip. This time around, money is a little tighter then usual and I was wondering what taxes are charged on hotel rooms? (if any) Just trying to work out my budget for the trip and I forgot what I paid last time.

Thx.

Did they do away with the (~3%) tourist tax? In the past, I got charged 16.39% taxes in hotels.

Orange , yeah, it was replaced with that new tourist tax applied to flights or something.

Was replaced by a $15.00 charge added to all flights arriving in CR. You do not notice it because it is collected by the airline so it is part of the fees added to the ticket.

The logic was that 1. Many hotels were avoiding charging the tax by having the guest pay cash to avoid a paper trail. 2. Tourist who stayed in condos, apartment, friends houses, etc. were not paying any tax so by adding it to the ticket the govt. got revenue from them.

The losers are Ticos and residents who do not stay in hotels and therefore never paid the hotel tax but now pay the $15.00
