Hopefully they'll start to have flights out pf FLL or MIA and help to bring down the prices a bit.

Air Tran operates out of both those airports. Perhaps Southwest will add some destinations to the ones Air Tran now serves.

Here is how Southwest gets by with flying the bags for free. A huge difference is walk up fares. I fly free on Delta but got stranded in FLL because of a canceled flight. Southwest to Birmingham was $ 346 walk up and Air Tran to Atlanta where I needed to be was $ 129.00 walk up. I had a carry on so it did not matter but to pay $ 20.00 for the bag you would save big still using Air Tran. So look for the walk ups to go up and so forth so they can make you think you are flying cheaper because your bag flies free. I am back out at Delta and we welcome them. Here is an old saying" Competition breeds business ".

Off course a very small percentage of passengers buy walk up tickets. Insinuating that walk up tickets allows an airline to not charge baggage fees is a specious argument at best. However, you have to remember Herman is a retired Delta employee and sometime goes a bit overboard in defending them. Remember the time he suggested that flying anyone but Delta was taking huge risk.

Nothing but blue skies do I see.......

The markets that may benefit the most could well be Atlanta, D.C. and DFW (look out AA :x )

After the failed attempt to acquire Frontier last yr., SW has been shopping for an airline to absorb into the system that will enable them to open up international markets (most profitable). Though Airtran only serves 4 international destinations currently, look for SW to expand and start to compete with the legend airlines to our most favored destinations :D

I will tell you the key reason SW makes money now . They have only one type of aircraft. That means they only need 1 type of support trucks, and 1 training system for pilots ramp workers, 1 parts room etc. As far as being safer on Delta I am not saying that. I will fly on anything with 2 wings and feel fine. Remember it is the trip to and from the airport where you need to be careful. Its all good guys of course I suggest Delta its in my blood but the pie is big enough to share. Just got back home and headed out to Delta now. I am out of retirement for a 1 year contract to help find areas to improve our service and save some cash. Hope everyone has a safe day. Uncle H.

In its announcement of the fine, the FAA said it determined that 286 of American's MD-80s were operated on a combined 14,278 passenger flights while they were not compliant.

There are dozens of examples where big name carriers either put off maintenance or just ignored "small" problems to get a plane in the air.

One of my favorite shows is "Air Emergency" (National Geographic Channel). They re-enact accidents or near-misses and how pilot error or equipment issues factored into it. Most of them are due to maintenance issues (something missed during inspection, incorrect bolts, wrong parts, overdue for maintenance, etc). So your statement that low-cost airlines are more likely to put us in danger just doesn't hold water in my opinion. They are all equally greedy (and sometimes reckless) a-holes who care a lot more about thier bottom line than our safety.

Cutting Maintenance is the easiest/ fastest to cut cost when money is tight. After almost all buy outs the buyer starts cutting every thing that does not bring money in NOW. With Maintenance on the top of the list
Maintenance can always be put off till the next day with out any one noticing, until some one gets killed that is--and of course we all know that those stupid gov. reg are with out merit, cause unneeded expenses and keep a good company down. :roll:

As in this case, I thought I read some where SW was just going to relogo the Air Tran planes , short term cost saver, but a long term maintenance problem if they want to stick to the one type of plane concept as a long term cost saver. Might be cheaper over a few years to retrain pilots, and the buy new of the same type they fly now and dump the maintenance units/repair hub

This may save you guys money at the big hubs with more competition with the big airlines, but us poor smucks in the boon docks will be footing the bill ( happened with Delta/NW ) as competition stops at the out here and our prices go up. So if you fly SW for a vacation, please bang one in honor of those of us here hinter land who paid for your cheaper flight :D :D

This could be great news for me if they add SJO, since Southwest is now flying out of Milwaukee, where AirTran already has a large presence, and MKE is a relatively short drive away. I used SW for the first time for a trip to Tucson in May, found a web-special of $191 total for Milwaukee to Phoenix (Tuscon is only a less-than 90-minute drive away, so it's almost as good), and NO bag fees. Fare was way less than anyone else that I paid the $10 to get SW's priority seating, first time ever I got a seat in the first four rows of the plane. :D

You still can buy you some msft. I bought it several times last week and sold it right back the next morning. Plan to do the same thing tomorrow and the rest of this week if it keeps fluctuating so predictably.

Well, If you took my advice on this one, you've gone from 23.91 on Oct 4th to 28.60 in 90 days.

I think MSFT is going down from here. Anyone got any other ideas ?
