I'm considering taking a taxi from the SL to La Parada de San Carlos bus terminal in SJ. It may be fun to take the bus to La Fortuna for a little excursion if the Gulch has a slow day.

Does anyone have experience with this method of transportation to LF? How far & how much via taxi from the SL to the bus terminal? How much are bus tickets from SJ to LF (round trip)?

Thanks.

as a matter of fact, I'm in La Fortuna now. Got here on 11/31/2010. Caught the San Carlos/Cuidad Quezada bus from Alajuela then transferred from San Carlos to La Fortuna via bus for 700.00Colones. About 1.5 to 2 hour ride. Been here all week and returning to San Jose via Interbus for $40.00US.

It can get unbearably crowded, stuffy and sweaty hot throughout the drive.

can anyone say anything about the action, if any, here?

Interbus will be a much more comfortable trip back. But, at least you got a taste of tico life on the way up. There is no p4p to speak of in La Fortuna, but it never hurts to ask if there is a speakeasy nearby.

Riding Costa Rican buses are good practice for riding cattle section on most airlines. Beware of the San Carlos bus terminal in San Jose. It is known for scams to part you from your luggage. I meet a gringo at the embassy who lost all of his luggage when he passed it to a guy he thought was loading the bus. It went out the window to a compatriot.
