I am having trouble emailing the Castillo hotel (first message returned as undeliverable, second no response), so maybe someone familiar with their rooms can help me. Do their deluxe rooms, without kitchenette, have air conditioning? Anyone care to comment about those rooms? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Their deluxe rooms with and without kitchenettes are both in their newer wing out back, and both have air conditioning. If I remember correctly the ones without kitchens are on the 2nd floor. |

Yes, the "motel style" rooms out in the back have window-unit style air conditioners. However, the "upstairs" rooms do not. I love Room 6, which is upstairs, and it does NOT have A/C, but you will not miss the A/C. There is a ceiling fan, which is so sexy to turn on when you and your lover have a fine layer of sweat built up... I stayed there 7/7/10 to 7/11/10 (in Room 6), and I did not once need the A/C. Castillo is my favorite, easy walk to the SL, a nice hotel with Costa Rican flavor. The chicas working the bar are very flirty and sexy. Hazel especially. And after the Castillo bar closes, the bar at Las Palmas next door is still open; holy shit is that bartender super hot. It is accessible through the Castillo courtyard, no need to hit the sidewalk, not that the sidewalk is dangerous or anything. Castillo rules. Very underrated hotel. |

Thanks everyone for your replies. I had used the email address on their website. Just sent another email to the address posted by Zebra. I have almost 4 weeks until I arrive, so I'll wait a few days to see if I get a reply. |

I stayed in a deluxe room in April. It was on the second floor and had A/C. Overall a good spacious room for a fair price. I would stay again for sure. Downsides: small bathroom, In-room safe is key operated, not combination, breakfast sucks. |

Anybody wanting slick, sleek amd modern is advised to go elsewhere. Hotel Castillo sure has a legion of fans though, and that outdoor bar is a terrif place on a Sunday afternoon. |

Actually, it sounds like Hank was just describing the rooms in the ORIGINAL building (where room #5 is located) and NOT the NEW wing. As I posted before I've stayed in the room on the top floor of the old building (not sure of the exact room number) and found it perfectly adequate. I didn't notice any problem with worn-out or rolly beds and as far as missing a/c who really needs it in SJ any way as long as the rooms have decent ventilation? OTOH, if you must have a/c or prefer newer construction and amenities, the Castillo also has that with the rooms in the new wing in the back (which is where I usually stay). The one area where I do agree with Skinflint is that the breakfast there leaves a lot to be desired and could be much better as it is at some other hotels. Still considering the price one pays to stay there, if one needs to have something other than just some toast, fresh fruit and hard boiled eggs for breakfast, one can easily pop over to any soda in the area (or even just Las Palmas) and get a perfectly fine breakfast for just a couple of bucks and still pay much less than those other hotels. |

I'll be staying in one of the standard rooms in the old section during my next trip - just for a change of atmosphere. The price is right! I don't rate my pleasure factor by the amount of money I spend - especially on a room. If it's safe, clean, has a private bath, and a friendly staff, then it meets my requirements. Also, I think most of my chica action will be at the MP's - other than a little partying at the SL. |
