I, like most gringos, have probably tipped too much in CR. Here is a good guide: http://www.travelandleisure.com/article ... -tipping/4 |

10% is included by law on all bar and restaurant bills. Check your to go meals it probably is incorrectly added. Ticos do not tip on top of that. I usually tip 10% more. BKTUNA/Boyd I am never going home |

And not tipping is an extremely important thing to them. The first phrase I was taught in spanish school in CR was "the servicio is enough". Pinche codos. |

Quote: Central and South America: Bars 10 percent at bars that serve food; none for drinks alone. That means DEL REY. No need to leave the bartender $20 tip because she smiled at you or you know her name. ![]() |

From what I've heard and read, you don't gain respect by tipping--you lose it. |

Here we go... 47 pages on the pros and cons of tipping. Like this topic has never been hashed around before. The concept that one loses respect if they happen to tip is BS. It's just a simple rationalization to be a cheap bastard. WE ARE NOT TICOS. We are gringos from a tipping country. When we show up in "gringo locations" like the HDR "they" expect the extra tip. Show up in a tico joint the expection is not there. If one wants to tip... tip. If one wants to pay cien... pay cien. It's your $$$ do as you please. Why is it that average ticos don't lay down an extra propina? Simple... they are, in general, broke. Berk..... |
