I have found a great deal on package that includes a room at the Best Western Downtown. I know the location is not the best, but almost too good to pass up. Does anyone know if the hotel is Chica Friendly and if there is a guest fee? Thanks in advance for the help. |

Since the search feature sucks ass (or I'm just an idiot and don't know how to use it) I have no links to offer but pretty sure the BW's guest policy is still anti-chica. |

The BW IRAZU (in Uruca on the way into town from the airport) and the BW in Jaco ARE definitely anti-chica (BIG TIME) HOWEVER, the BW in downtown SJ is definitely NOT anti-chica, they don't even charge any chica guest fees. OTOH, it is in a rough part of town, known as the Zona Roja, and for that reason it is not favored or discussed about much on this board. That doesn't mean it is an unfortunate compromise if you're "forced" to stay there as part of some package. On OTHER CR travel forums the BW Downtown is actually the hotel of CHOICE for many mongers (presumably for its close proximity to many tico MP's, its price and its US chain hotel status which is something often preferred by some travelers for various reasons).

I may have spoken too soon. Below is the response I got from the hotel, which states there is a $10.00 fee. Based on the responses I got on the board folks thought there was no guest fee. Well I guess for a free hotel I can pay a fee it they really end up asking for it. The response I got from the hotel is: The hotel allows guest in the rooms under the following conditions: 1- Person must be 18 years older. 2- Should present a valid ID with photo. 3- There is an additional charge of US$10.00 per visit after 6.00 p.m. 4- The hotel has a dress code for visitors in rooms. |

This used to come up with regularity when the Hotel Prez tightened theit policy--Make sure your guest knows where you are taking her as part of the negotiating process. Some will have leggings or a shawl with them to stay hotel-legal...or you can avoid the issue altogether by picking a more modestly dressed Chica. Takes the possible embarassment factor right out of the equation, so you can get to the "bare ass"ment... sorry about that. |

To be very honest, my info may be outdated. I hadn't ever heard before about those last 2 restrictions. They might be relatively new and indicative of a change to a less tolerant attitude toward our kind. The comparison to the Prez is very apt. While, to the best of my knowledge that hotel hasn't added any chica fees, as we all know they have added their notorious chica dress code, which has turned that hotel from one that USED to be highly popular with many CRTers to one that only a relatively very few of us still stay at. While the BW Downtown was never all that popular around here, I know it did have its fair share of proponents on another certain monger travel site that begins with the letter I. I haven't been on that site in at least a year because I don't care for some of the guys who post regularly in its CR section (IMHO, if you think CRT has its share of a-holes then you should check out that site). So the consensus even over there may have changed when they changed their chica guest policies. However, as much as I hate to recommend anyone go there, that might be the best place to go IF you want to get the latest lowdown on this particular hotel. Actually, I think ID has a better recommendation to simply take a pass on the place. While te chica fee may only be after 6PM, how many chicas does one usually bring back to their hotel during the day anyway. Take the price of the package deal, subtract the lowest airfare you could get independently (w/o hotel added on) and add the number of times per night you might bring back a chica and you will get the real price you'd be paying for this place. Then factor in possible hassles over your chicas style of dress and the fact that you'd probably want to hop in a cab to get to our usual partying grounds at the BM or SL night or day (because of simple distance) and then decide whether any savings you might have over a normally CRT discounted and better located room at the Castillo, SL, Amistad, etc. is worth that added inconvenience. |

Add to Brother Prolijo's list of "Better Option Hotels" the Dunn Inn (1 block from the HLH and 4 blocks closer to the HDR). The quaint Hotel Tiquicia might be an even better choice, depending on budget and travel style. |
