Now that AA stopped their non stop to SJO it means you have to fly Spirit. Would rather go through Miami and pay a bit more then be nickle and dimed by those fee for this fee for that vultures.

Thus thread got me curious about the difference in fares between FLL and MIA to SJO as I always use MIA. I arbitrarily punched in the dates June 6/13 and got this.

FLL-SJO Spirit $410.00 +seat selection fee+checked baggage fee+carry on bag fee+bottle of water fee.

MIA-SJO AA $468.00 seat selection no fee,2 checked bags no fee, carry on bag no fee. water, soft drinks on board no fee.

If these dates are representative of the day to day fares FLL is not much cheaper, if in fact any cheaper, then MIA for non stops to SJO.

If you do the homework, flights to CR from FLL are easily obtainable for closer to 200 than 400....also, consider colombia or peru for around the same, or even less, sales price.....

check out the prices for spirits 9 dollar club also....FLL easily trumps MIA for price most of the time......

MIA is worth a look, but the traveler looking for bargains out of beautiful, downtown SoFla is needs to check out FLL

if I may make an analogy, American Air and MIA is like a cold Crack Whore and the Hotel Presidente....greedy, untrustworthy, stiff, not really chica friendly (only pretend so), napkin rationing, rarely offering discounts, an interesting Cafe Rail coupled with poor food and service...etc....

Now, FLL and it's discount airlines are like the big titted Little Darling at the SL, Dunn, NYB or your favorite MP...friendly, often inexpensive, dependable for what they advertise and willing to often discount services....

as I said I arbitrarily selected a date. No research Involved. I further qualified it my saying "If these dates are representative of the day to day fares FLL is not much cheaper

Forgetting about the difference in airports your analogy is way off the mark. You are comparing AA to SPIRIT  who perennially lead the air carrier industry in customer service complaints (per thousand travelers). If you had compared their service level to someone like TACA your point would possibly be valid.

Avg Delay (min.) for AA

2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010

Departure 56.77 59.00 61.47 60.46 60.97 60.42

Arrival 56.26 58.90 61.02 58.70 59.31 58.99

As the above chart shows, AA has managed to get worse with time

actually kind of a mixed bag but really not relevant as I never claimed AA was a first class carrier simply put they are 2 or 3 classes above Spirit no matter what class you prefer to put them in.

and AA lost baggage claims are sky high.....the manner in which AA can lose baggage is legendary!

plus, their complaints per 100k miles of travel are in the lower 50% of the major carriers...in fact, as previously documented, (by official DOT reports) AA is getting worse and worse!

yes, the prior analogy should be qualified to add that AA service is priced at Hotel Presidente levels, but the accommodations and ambiance is more akin to the mens room at Chellies after a busy weekend

OK OK OK OK OK

We get it!!!

You dislike AA!!! :P

but that hardly exonerates Spirit but more importantly has little to do with the price spread between FLL/MIA to SJO other then Spirt has the only non stop from FLL and AA & TACA have the only non stops from MIA.

Are you guys saying that AA no longer flies non-stop from Miami to San Jose? Where would there be a stop? Dallas? I thought that Miami was AA's Latin American hub. That's one reason why I haven't used them to go to CR since I am in SoCal.

AA does indeed fly nonstop MIA>>SJO--4 flights a day.
Price spreads on both airlines for basic fares are: AA $119>>$182 and Spirit $85>>$153 The taxes and fees are obviously the wild card + externalities like quality of experience + how close you are to either airport + cost of parking, etc. Neither airline is hands-down better than the other without these factored in. Thus I have spoken.
