Is the water safe to drink in SJ? Is there any particular food to avoid to prevent spending half of my vaca on the can?

Water is fine...the only food I would avoid is the chicken empanadas at La Esquina de Buenos Aires...beyond that, I've never had a problem in SJO-CH

I drink the water there all the time and have no problem. Never had any problem with the food and I eat with an inquisitive and explorative nature all the time, so I will eat just about anything anywhere once. You never know, that stuff you smell cooking at the street vendor may just be some of the best damn food you ever got. And I'm not afraid of food poisoning, I'm well prepared and conditioned.

No food to avoid and the water is fine. I do suggest if your headed out on a day time mp tour or just walking around town going to Manolo's a local favorite famous for its cream-filled churros (doughnut tubes) best sugar rush in town. The second-floor balcony, with its view of the pedestrian mall below, is ideal for an afternoon of people-watching if that's your thing.

TD (traveler's diarrhea) usually hits those folks who simply aren't used to a new area's organisms. On my last trip to Colombia (I had been there many times) both traveling companions got a dose & I didn't. I travel extensively & have only had one serious bout in 35 years - in Calcutta, & it was a beaut!

In Mexico they often call it "Uncle Sam's revenge"...... for those who travel north.

Bottom line, if you don't travel much you ain't going to avoid it. Take the other advice here & come prepared so the impact in minimal. And sample the food everywhere; your body will develop a strong immune system in response.
